Hugh Barter (born 15 September 2005 in Nagoya, Aichi, Japan) is an Australian-Japanese racing driver, who drove for Maserati MSG Racing as a test driver during the 2022/23 ABB FIA Formula E World Championship.[1] Barter was the youngest driver in the field when he made his test debut at the 2023 Rookie Test for Maserati, aged just seventeen when he was handed the steering wheel to Edoardo Mortara's #48 Maserati Tipo Folgore Gen 3.[2]
Background[]
Barter began his career in karting, competing in Australia in various series from 2016 until the 2020 season, notably competing in the Rotax Max Challenge Grand Finals.[3] In 2021 the Australian-Japanese pilot would move to Europe in order to compete in single-seaters, having earned a spot in the French F4 Championship where he would finish an impressive second in his rookie season.[3] A sophomore campaign in French F4 saw Barter match that effort, despite winning half of the season's races, while the Australian racer also managed to claim second in the F4 Spanish Championship.[3]
Barter subsequently secured a seat in the FIA Formula 3 Championship for the 2023 season, Campos Racing having promoted him based on his performances for them in 2022 in F4.[3]
Formula E History[]
Barter was a somewhat surprise call-up to the 2022/23 ABB FIA Formula E World Championship test driver roster, when Maserati MSG Racing signed the Australian-Japanese pilot up to drive for them at the 2023 Rookie Test.[1] Partnered by Felipe Drugovich for the day, Barter would be the youngest driver in the paddock at the test at the Tempelhofring, as he set the sixteenth fastest time in the #48 Maserati and fell just two laps shy of 100 tours of the Tempelhofring on his FE test debut.[2]
