The Hyderabad Street Circuit is a temporary racing circuit, formed around NTR Park in the city of Hyderabad, Telangana, India, which was used to host the Hyderabad E-Prix, around of the ABB FIA Formula E World Championship.[1] Originally created for the purpose of hosting FE E-Prix, the Hyderabad Street Circuit made its FE debut as host of the inaugural Hyderabad E-Prix as part of the 2022/23 season, which was also the first major FIA international race to be staged in India since the 2013 Indian Grand Prix.[1]
Formula E History[]
A letter of intent to host a round of the ABB FIA Formula E World Championship was signed by the Government of Telangana and Formula E in January 2022, which declared interests of both parties to stage a new event for the FE World Championship, the Hyderabad E-Prix.[1] Plans for a circuit on the shores of the Hussain Sagar lake were quickly developed and distributed to FE teams, although after heavy criticism a new layout was developed and later approved for the Hyderabad Street Circuit.[1]
Planning Makes Perfect[]
The original plan for the Hyderabad Street Circuit was to use the NTR Marg and Telugu Talli Flyover as the backbone of the circuit, creating a T-shaped circuit with eleven total corners that planners quickly built in simulators and distributed to FE's various teams.[2] However, after a likewarm reception at best, including remarks about the shape of the circuit design, the circuit was reimagined, with Driven International taking over and drastically changing the layout of the circuit before again sending a simulation to FE's entrants.[2] The new design was quickly approved, and would avoid any use of the Flyover which had been raised as an issue during simulation work, and would instead stick to the roads in and around NTR Park with the pitlane running through the park itself.[2]
Circuit History[]
Work on the circuit began in the summer of 2022 after the Hyderabad E-Prix had been included on the provisional calender for the 2022/23 ABB FIA Formula E World Championship, with the organisers planning to test the venue well before its FE debut.[2] Two rounds of the Indian Racing League were scheduled to compete at the circuit in late 2022, although the first scheduled round at the new Hyderabad Street Circuit in November proved chaotic, with a larger than expected number of spectators causing a complete organisational failure, before running was stopped after the first practice session due to a major accident.[2] The second test event with the IRL in December 2022 was, in contrast, very productive for the new venue, with the IRL successfully staging a quartet of races, and FIA circuit inspectors signing off on the circuit, albeit with a caveat that there would have to be some changes to cater for FE's specific needs.[2]
