The Jaguar I-Type 1 was an all-electric, single-seater, racing car design that was developed by Jaguar in order to compete in the 2016/17 FIA Formula E Championship with the factory Jaguar Racing team.[1] The first powertrain developed by Jaguar for the series, and one that was given limited design and development time due to Jaguar's late decision to join the series ahead of season 3, the I-Type 1 would be more of a testbed than a full on attempt at racing in the series, although Mitch Evans and Adam Carroll would score multiple times during the campaign.[2]

Competitive History[]

Development History[]

Having signed up to compete in Formula E, and then agreed to come in earlier than originally planned, Jaguar would decide to take inspiration from the original Spark-Renault SRT_01E powertrain design.[3] Signing a deal to for Williams Advanced Engineering to advise and assist the development of a powertrain, the I-Type I would end up with a single eMotor design bolted to a two-speed gearbox which were then mounted in an aluminium casing in order to meet the crash-testing protocol before the homologation period ended.[3] Because of the design and its inherent similarity to the original, the inverter, which had been upgraded with advise from Williams, would be mounted above the battery which did raise the centre of gravity slightly.[3]

To compensate for its rushed addition to the grid, Jaguar were given 21 days of testing for the design, which was conducted between Mitch Evans, Ho-Pin Tung and Adam Carroll.[4]
