Jaime Alguersuari, born 23 February 1990, is a former Spanish racing driver, who competed for Virgin Racing during the 2014/15 FIA Formula E Championship.[1] A consistent team performer, Alguersuari lacked the raw pace of team mate Sam Bird through the season, and missed the season finale in London after health concerns.[2]

It would be those same health concerns that ended Alguersuari's racing career, leaving the Spaniard to become part of ITV Sport's coverage of the Formula E Championship.[3]

Background[]

Alguersuari began his career in karting in his native Spain, before being promoted through the ranks of Formula Junior and Spanish Formula Three to drive in the British Formula Three championship in 2008.[1] After taking the title in his début year, Alguersuari moved to the Formula Renault championship in 2009.[1] However, after Sebastien Bourdais was dropped by Toro Rosso in Formula One, Alguersuari was called up to the team, becoming the youngest driver in F1's history to start a race.[1]

In a two and a half year spell, Alguersuari obtained a best finish of fourteenth in the final standings in 2011, before Toro Rosso decided to introduce new faces to the team. Alguersuari therefore opted to become the official Pirelli Test driver from 2012 to 2013.[1]

Formula E History[]

Alguersuari and Bird were announced as drivers for Virgin Racing when the team launched its programme in early 2014.[1] After missing out on points in Beijing, Alguersuari finished in the mid-points at the next three ePrix, including a best finish of fourth at Buenos Aires.[4] This run was ended in Miami, although Alguersuari's points were key to keeping Virgin Racing in the title hunt by the halfway point in the season.

It became apparent that the Spaniard's pace was starting to fall off in the second half of the season, with the economic driving style required to be competitive throughout an ePrix lacking from Alguersuari's toolbox. He only scored points once more before the end of the season, before a medical issue after the conclusion of the Moscow ePrix ended his season prematurely.[2]

The FIA temporarily suspended Alguersuari's racing license after the Spaniard fainted at the end of the Russian race.[2] Although medical tests in the circuit medical centre revealed that the problem was caused by dehydration and exhaustion, the FIA pushed Alguersuari into a full medical test to ensure there was no underlying cause, meaning he missed the season finale.[2] Fabio Leimer took up his seat, although the Swiss driver struggled to get to grips with the Spark-Renault SRT_01E in race conditions.[5]

Ultimately, Alguersuari would have to retire from motorsport completely due to his health issues, leaving him to become part of the broadcast team at ITV Sport.
