Carlton Jakston "Jak" Crawford (born 2 May 2005 in Charlotte, North Carolina, United States) is an American racing driver who served as a reserve and development driver for Andretti Formula E during the 2024/25 ABB FIA Formula E World Championship.[1] An Aston Martin Development driver and race winner in various series including FIA Formula 3 and FIA Formula 2, Crawford made his FE bow at the 2024 Rookie Test, with a run that impressed Andretti enough to sign him as their official reserve driver for Season 11.[1]
Background[]
Crawford began his career in karting in North America, although would notably compete outside of the US from a young age, including an outing in the ROK Cup at the age of nine.[2] 2018 saw the American youth graduate to single seaters with a seat in the NACAM Formula 4 Championship, finishing second, while also completing a partial campaign in U.S. F2000 as he had been too young to start the season.[2] The American youth then moved across to Europe having become a member of the Red Bull Junior Team to race in the Italian and ADAC Formula 4 Champions, finishing as runner-up in the latter to Jonny Edgar by just two points.[2][3]
Aston's American Hope: 2021 - Present[]
For 2021 Crawford would sign a deal to compete in the Euroformula Open Championship alongside a plan to race in the FIA Formula 3 Championship, with the American youth finishing third in the former series with eight wins in sixteen races.[2] For 2022 Crawford would get a sophomore campaign in FIA F3, finishing seventh with one win, while also securing sixth in the Formula Regional Asian Championship.[2] 2023 saw Crawford graduate to the FIA Formula 2 Championship, claiming one victory as he finished thirteenth in the series, before a switch of teams for 2024, as well as a move to the Aston Martin Driver Development Programme, saw the American youth improve to fifth in his sophomore season.[2]
Formula E History[]
Crawford was signed by Andretti Formula E to run as a test driver ahead of the 2024 Rookie Test, the only in-season test conducted during the 2023/24 ABB FIA Formula E World Championship, partnering Zane Maloney for the day.[4] A steady day of improvement from the American youth saw him end the session with over 100 laps under his belt as well as the second fastest time of the day, a tenth faster than his teammate, with Andretti impressed by his pace.[5] Indeed, Andretti would opt to continue working with Crawford into the 2024/25 season, signing the American youth as their development and reserve driver for the campaign, as well as handing him a run at the 2025 Jeddah E-Prix I in the rookie free practice session where Crawford would set the seventh fastest time.[6]
