The Jakarta International E-Prix Circuit, is a street circuit based in Ancol, Jakarta, Indonesia, which made its debut as a host venue of the ABB FIA Formula E World Championship by staging the inaugural 2022 Jakarta E-Prix on 4 June 2022.[1] Only the third international race circuit to be constructed in Indonesia, the Jakarta International Circuit was formed after initial plans to host the Jakarta E-Prix around the Jakarta National Monument were abandoned during the Covid-19 Pandemic.[2]
Background[]
The Jakarta International E-Prix Circuit was first proposed in late 2021, after plans to build a circuit around the Jakarta National Monument were abandoned due to restraints in the local area about staging a race in that location.[1][2] The Jakarta National Monument had previously been selected to be the home of the Jakarta E-Prix back when FE first tried to stage the race during the 2019/20 season, although the race was cancelled due to the Covid-19 Pandemic.[3] After missing out on a place on the 2020/21 calendar, due to issues about the venue and the ongoing Pandemic, the Ancol area of Jakarta was selected to be the host of the inaugural Jakarta E-Prix in 2022.[1][2]
Work on the circuit began in January 2022, with Jakarta Governor Anies Baswedan inaugurating the circuit on 21 January 2022 in a ceremony at the Ancol Bay City shopping centre.[4]
Formula E History[]
The Jakarta International E-Prix Circuit hosted its first race on 4 June 2022, with the 2022 Jakarta E-Prix forming the ninth round of the 2021/22 ABB FIA Formula E World Championship, which was won by Mitch Evans.[1][5]
It was later announced during the 2022-23 Formula E World Championship that there would be another Jakarta E-Prix set for 3 and 4 June 2023 as a double-header, making the E-Prix an annual occurrence.
Circuit History[]
Circuit Layouts[]
The circuit opened with a 600 metre long straight, followed by a sweeping entry to a relatively right hand corner of turn one.[6] The circuit then narrowed before turns two and three, two 90° rights, before a two part left hand carried the field onto the back straight, running past the Ancol Bay City shopping centre.[6] Turn six then carried the field into the next complex in a tightening left-hand curve, which was curtailed by a sharp left-hand apex at turn seven.[6]
Turn eight was formed through a 90° right, before a shallow right-left chicane carried the field into another relatively open right-hand curve at turn eleven.[6] Turn twelve was little more than a kink onto the final straight, ended by a right-hand hairpin turn at turn thirteen ahead of the final series of corners.[6] Turn fourteen was a right-hand kink followed by a similarly angled left-hand kink at fifteen, which then tightened to form a 90° left at sixteen.[6] Another sweeping left followed to form turn seventeen, before the field would brake for a sharp right-hander at the final corner of turn eighteen an return to the start/finish straight.[6]
