James John Calado (born 13 June 1989 in Cropthorne, Worcestershire, United Kingdom) is a British racing driver, who competed in the 2019/20 ABB FIA Formula E Championship with Jaguar Racing.[1] A multiple in various junior series as well as the 2017 World Endurance Championship Champion for GTE-Pro, Calado would join the Jaguar FE team to partner Mitch Evans, having helped develop their car for the 2019/20 season.[2]
Calado would be overshadowed by Evans across the season, and would miss the final two races of the delayed season due to commitments in the WEC.[3] Finishing down in nineteenth in the Championship, 'Calado would lose his Jaguar seat to Ferrari GTE teammate Sam Bird for the 2020/21 season.[4]
Background[]
Karting[]
Calado began his karting career in 1999, racing in the cadets category. From there he partook in multiple championships and claimed multiple titles, including those of British Cadet Champion in 2001 and ICA European Champion in 2005 as well as finishing runner-up in the ICA Junior European Championship in 2003 and the 2006 International Kart Grand Prix at Macau.[5] Among the drivers Calado raced against included Formula E drivers Sébastien Buemi, Jean-Éric Vergne and Jaime Alguersuari and the late Jules Bianchi.
British Barnstorming[]
In 2008, Calado made his debut in single-seaters, contesting the Formula Renault UK championship with Fortec, and became one of the first racers to receive backing from the newly formed Racing Steps Foundation (the other being Oliver Turvey).[6] Contesting two years of the championship, Calado finished his debut season sixth, achieving his maiden win at Snetterton, and ended as runner-up of the 2009 championship, whilst also claiming titles in the Formula Renault UK Winter Cup and Portuguese Winter Series.[7] For his performances, Calado was shortlisted for the McLaren Autosport BRDC Award in October 2009.[8]
In 2010, Calado joined Carlin to contest the British Formula 3 championship.[9] Claiming five wins across the season, Calado finished championship runner-up to teammate Jean-Éric Vergne.
Support Race Surge[]
In 2011, Calado moved to F1 support race series GP3 with team champions ART Grand Prix (then known as Lotus ART). Achieving a race win in Valencia, consistent performances were enough for Calado to finish second to teammate and future F1 driver Valtteri Bottas.[10] After contesting a non-points round at Yas Marina in 2011 (in which he took victory in the sprint race), Calado graduated to GP2 the following year, reuniting with ART (racing under the name Lotus GP) and partnering future F1 and Formula E driver Esteban Gutiérrez.[11] Achieving two sprint race wins at Sepang and Hockenheim, Calado ended the year fifth overall.
Calado returned to GP2 in 2013, once again partnering with ART but this time serving as teammate to Daniel Abt.[12] Taking two wins in the sprint races at Spa-Francorchamps and the season finale at Yas Marina, Calado finished the season third behind Sam Bird and champion Fabio Leimer. Calado's reward for his GP2 form was to be named as the third driver by the Sahara Force India F1 team in September 2013, having attended the young drivers test at Silverstone with them earlier in the season.[13]
Endurance Elation[]
Since 2014, Calado has served as a member of the Ferrari stable, competing in the FIA WEC with AF Corse.[14] In 2017, Calado and his teammates won the LMGTE Pro title and two years later achieved victory in the 24 Hours at Le Mans.[15][16]
Formula E History[]
In June 2019, Calado partook in track and simulator tests for Panasonic Jaguar Racing, getting his first taste of the ABB FIA Formula E Championship as a result as Jaguar evaluated a permanent replacement for Nelson Piquet Jr.[2] In September 2019, Calado was speculated to partner former GP3 and GP2 rival Mitch Evans at the British outfit for the 2019/20 season, a deal that was officially announced on 2 October 2019, with Calado using #51 as his race number.[1][17]
