James Rossiter (born 25 August 1983 in Oxford, United Kingdom) is a British racing driver who is listed as the test and development driver for the DS Techeetah team during the 2018/19 ABB FIA Formula E Championship.[1] A driver with vast experience in the World Endurance Championship, Super GT and Japanese Super Formula, Rossiter joined Techeetah to help develop their season five challenger, the DS E-Tense FE 19.[1]
Background[]
Rossiter's racing career would being in karting at the age of 14, with the Brit rising through the ranks of the Rotax Max class until his graduation to single seaters in 2001.[2] That year saw Rossiter test a Formula Palmer Audi car, before securing a seat in the British Formula Renault series for 2002.[2] A second season in British FR was required before Rossiter showed his potential, with the Brit the only man to seriously challenge eventual champion Lewis Hamilton.[2]
BAR Boosting[]
Rossiter secured a drive in the British Formula 3 Championship for 2004, with the Brit claiming three wins and third overall at the end of the season.[2] That enticed BAR, an entrant in Formula One to draft Rossiter into their development programme, allowing Rossiter to move into the European racing scene.[2] 2005 saw Rossiter competing the Formula 3 Euro Series and serve as test driver for BAR in F1.[2]
Formula E History[]
Rossiter would get his maiden run in an ABB FIA Formula E Championship car ahead of the 2017/18 season, when the Venturi Formula E Team drafted him in to take part in the 2017 Valencia Test.[3] The Brit subsequently missed out on a race seat with the team after the test, although he was offered a second test with the Techeetah team ahead of the 2018 Rookie Test.[4] An impressive run in Marrakech saw Rossiter set the fifth quickest lap of the day, with Techeetah deciding to offer the Brit a development role for the rest of the season.[5][1]
Techeetah Tester[]
Rossiter was heavily involved in the development of the DS E-Tense FE 19, although he would ultimately miss out on a race seat with Techeetah for 2018/19.[1] Regardless, Rossiter was retained as the team's test and development driver for the campaign, and duly took part in the 2019 Rookie Test, setting the second fastest time overall.[6]
