 Jarno Trulli (born 13 July 1974) is a former driver and team owner in the FIA Formula E Championship, having entered the Trulli Formula E Team in the inaugural 2014/15 season.[1] Trulli was the most experienced driver on the grid that season, having entered 256 Grand Prix in Formula One between 1997 and 2011, but that did not mean he would have a strong season, with the Italian ace only picking up points in one race all season.[1][2]

Trulli would opt to drop himself down to his team's reserve driver for the 2015/16 season, signing up Salvador Duran to replace him in the second pair of cars.[3] The Italian racer's effort would enter a quartet of cars with powertrains built by Motomatica, but a terrible pre-season saw the team fail to complete any running at the 2015 Donington Test. The team would then fail to get through scrutineering at the first two ePrix of the season, before both Trulli and Motomatica decided to withdraw from the series just before the 2015 Punta del Este ePrix.[4]


Trulli began competing in go-karts, claiming numerous titles, including three National Championships in his native Italy.[1] 1996 saw Trulli take a huge step in his career, taking the German Formula Three championship for Benetton F1's Junior team, leading him to a début in Formula One in 1997.[1] After a debut drive for Minardi, Prost Grand Prix took on Trulli for the remainder of the season, with Trulli eventually staying with the team until 1999.[1]

After a two year spell with Jordan, Trulli obtained a drive with Renault F1, taking his one and only GP victory at Monaco in 2004.[1] Five years with Toyota followed his departure from Renault at the end of 2004, before he became involved in the new Lotus Racing Team.[1] After two seasons with the rookie team, Trulli retired from Formula One.[1]

Formula E History

Trulli announced his entry as both a team owner and driver in June 2014, with Michela Cerruti as the team's second driver.[1] A difficult start to the season was rectified by a fourth place finish in the 2015 Buenos Aires ePrix, before Cerruti quit the team before the 2015 Miami ePrix.[5] Trulli arranged for former F1 colleague Vitantonio Liuzzi to drive for him in Miami, lending him a helmet as well as a race car.[5]

Yet, the glory of Buenos Aires would only be matched once more during the season, as Trulli rolled back the years to take pole position for the 2015 Berlin ePrix, a shock to most.[6] It was not to be, however, as mistakes and a lack of race pace caused Trulli to tumble down the order, meaning he failed to score anything other than the three points already banked for pole.[6]

Liuzzi departed from the team due to his ADAC Masters commitments before the double header in London due to other commitments, leading Trulli to sign up a youngster.[7] Alex Fontana linked up with the team in the week before the season finale, but neither he nor Trulli could add to the team's tally, leaving them rock bottom of the Championship.

Formula Flop

Trulli decided to step down as a full time racing driver at the end of the inaugural season, instead focusing on building up his team's partnership with electronics firm Motomatica. Salvador Duran came in to fill his seat as Liuzzi confirmed he would rejoin the team, although their input into the car's development would be non-existent.[3] As it turned out, the new Motomatica JT-01 proved to be a terrible design, plagued by problems that prevented the car from running at all during the 2015 Donington Test, leaving Trulli's start to the season in doubt.

The cars were shipped to the 2015 Beijing ePrix, but there would be no driving there either as they failed scrutineering prior to the race. Duran left the team upon hearing this news, leaving Trulli to enter himself for the 2015 Putrajaya ePrix, only for the team to miss scrutineering entirely after more problems. With that, both Trulli and Motomatica decided to abandon the project, quitting the series and ending both of group's involvement in Formula E.[4]
