The Jeddah Corniche E-Prix Circuit is an international motorsport street circuit constructed in the city of Jeddah in Mecca Province, Saudi Arabia, as host of the Jeddah E-Prix, a round of the ABB FIA Formula E World Championship.[1] Based on a shortened version of the Jeddah Corniche Circuit, used by Formula One, the circuit would host its first E-Prix as the third and fourth rounds of the 2024/25 season, taking over from the Diriyah Street Circuit as the host of Saudi Arabia's FE round.[1][2]
Background[]
The Jeddah Corniche Circuit was initially created in order to host the inaugural Saudi Arabain Grand Prix in 2021 for Formula One, breaking ground in March 2021 before being completed on the eve of its F1 debut on 5 December 2021, a purpose built street circuit designed by Carsten Tilke.[3] Featuring in further F1 seasons, the Jeddah circuit would quickly be branded as the fastest street circuit in Grand Prix racing, although it also quickly gained a reputation for being a brutual circuit and featured several heavy accidents in both F1 and Formula 2.[3]
Formula E History[]
The decision to move the annual ABB FIA Formula E World Championship round in Saudi Arabia from the driver's favourite Diriyah Street Circuit, host of the Diriyah E-Prix since 2018, was made after the series' 2024 visit, where overtaking with the Generation 3 car had proved difficult.[2] Jeddah and its existing circuit quickly emerged as the favourites to replace the Riyadh based venue, and in the build-up to the 2024/25 season the new Jeddah E-Prix was announced, with the Jeddah Corniche Circuit selected to host the race, which would be a double header.[2] Scheduled as a double-header on 14-15 February 2025, the Corniche Circuit would be shortened and revised for FE's maiden voyage to the circuit, with a hairpin cutting off half the Grand Prix circuit, before additional chicanes were added to the remaining portion of the circuit to better suit FE's requirements for energy harvesting.[4]
Circuit History[]
The Jeddah Corniche E-Prix Circuit was first unveiled as an E-Prix host on 21 November 2024, with initial circuit maps showing a hairpin between turns 3 and 22 of the Grand Prix circuit, a bus-stop-esque chicane and two additional chicanes added to the start/finish straight.[4] The circuit would also be the first to feature Pit Boost, after the FIA and Formula E signed off on the system's use for the third round of the season.[5]
Circuit Layouts[]
The lap begins following the Grand Prix layout, with the field starting with a left-right chicane that was a lot wider than most circuits designed for FE, a legacy of the series using a Grand Prix circuit built in the 21st century.[4] Turn three was likewise along the Grand Prix route, before a hairpin left formed a short-cut for the FE field, cutting the Grand Prix circuit in half to take the field to the end of the Corniche Circuit's normal second sector.[4] From there the FE field would again follow the Grand Prix layout, a sweeping curve carrign the field into a long-apex left of turn five, which was followed by the sweeping double-right of turns six and seven, itself followed by another gentle drift left.[4]
From there came the second deviation from the Grand Prix layout, with turns eight/nine a tight left-right chicane combo form the first element of a bus-stop style chicane, with turns ten/eleven the reverse to return the field back onto the Grand Prix layout after a short straight.[4] Turn twelve, a long left hand curve would end in a hairpin left of turn thirteen, which followed a short straight before another FE inspired chicane appeared for turns fourteen-fifteen-sixteen, a 90° left abruptly followed by tighter right-hander and then ended by a shallower left hander.[4] A short blast followed with pit-in located on the left-hand side of the circuit, before the reverse chicane combination appeared as turns seventeen-eighteen-nineteen, with the right hand curve out of turn nineteen carrying the field back onto the start/finish straight.[4]
The location for Attack Mode was not included on the initial circuit maps, but was expected to be located at either the turn four or turn thirteen hairpins.
