The Jeddah E-Prix, officially the ABB Formula E Jeddah E-Prix, is an upcoming motorsport event set to form part of the ABB FIA Formula E World Championship, first held in 2025.[1] The event, which replaced the Diriyah E-Prix on the FE calendar, would be the second E-Prix event to be held in Saudi Arabia, initially held on a revised layout of the Jeddah Corniche Circuit used to host the Saudi Arabian Grand Prix.[1]

City History[]

Found on the coast of the Red Sea, the area of Jeddah was first occupied in the 6th century BCE, with the oldest part of the future city starting as a fishing village by a Yemeni tribe, remaining a small community until Islam came to the fore in the Middle East.[2] In CE 647 the village was transformed into a port under the Rashidun Caliphate, aside from 702 when the port briefly spent some months occupied by pirates from Kingdom of Axum, before Jeddah came under the control of the Abbasids amid the fall of the Umayyad Empire, and would subsequently become engulfed in various regional wars between the Abbasids, Tulinids of Egypt and local tribes.[2] Throughout Jeddah would remain without walls, before falling under Fatimid control as they turned the port into a major trading hub for their emerging empire, until that too was replaced by Saladin's Ayyubid dynasty which inherited Jeddah along with the other provinces.[2]

Forts and Ottomans: 1171 - 1918[]

Jeddah remained a key part of the Ayyubid dynasty's territory until the fall of Baghdad, when the region of Hejaz, where Jeddah was located, was absorbed into the Mamluk Sultanate, who would eventually fortify the city in 1497 amid raids from Portuguese explorers and privateers.[2] With the defeat of the Mamluk Sultanate in 1517 the city passed into the control of the Ottoman Empire, resulting in further reinforcement of the walls of Jeddah in 1525, a move that was tested in succesive seiges from land and sea by Portuguese raiders.[2] The city continued to be a major port for both trade and protection of the Red Sea for the Ottoman Empire, while also increasing its reputation as the gateway to the holy city of Mecca for Islamic pilgrims.[2]

The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia: 1918 - Present[]

In 1802 Jeddah and Mecca were captured by Nejdi forces although the Ottoman Empire would reconquer both cities, although anti-Ottoman sentiment would remain in the city, resulting int eh city being a major element of a revolt against the Ottoman Empire during the First World War.[2] Various revolts and a brief period as part of the Kingdom of Hejaz, Jeddah would eventually fall under Al-Saud dynasty rule in 1925, and would lose its prominence in regional politics after being partnered with Mecca under the new province of Makkah, although Jeddah continued to enjoy royal status with the construction of the Khuzam Palace for King Abdul Aziz in 1928.[2] The twenieth century would see Jeddah expand beyond its old walls before further development programmes in the 21st century resulting in the population expanding beyond 3,750,000.[2]

Recent years have seen Jeddah turn into a cultural hub for Saudi Arabia, with various art installations being created around the city, as well as the King Abdullah Sports City on the outskirts of the city to host international sporting events.[2] In 2021 the city joined the Formula One world by hosting its first Grand Prix at the Jeddah Corniche Circuit, which was a semi-permanent circuit built around the Corniche area of the city.[2]

Formula E History[]

Jeddah was proposed as a host for the ABB FIA Formula E World Championship ahead of the 2024/25 season, with Saudi Arabia deciding to move its race from Diriyah.[3] Jeddah was ultimately chosen with its existing circuit, the Jeddah Corniche Circuit, being proposed as the host for the race, albeit with a major revision to the layout to account for FE's specific needs.[4] The Jeddah E-Prix was to debut in February 2025 as a double header round, with the second race expected to see the debut of Pit Boost to the series.[3]

Circuit History[]

The Jeddah Corniche E-Prix Circuit was the first circuit layout used for the Jeddah E-Prix, formed largely from the first and third sectors on the full Grand Prix circuit, with additional chicanes.[4]
