Jehan Daruvala (born 1 October 1998 in Mumbai, India) is an Indian racing driver, who serves as the test and reserve driver for Mahindra Racing during the 2022/23 ABB FIA Formula E World Championship.[1] A veteran of the FIA Formula 2 Championship, in which he will compete alongside his FE reserve role in 2022/23, Daruvala has won races in F2, F3 and the Toyota Racing Series, and is a former member of the Red Bull Junior Team.[2]
Background[]
Daruvala began karting at the fairly late age of thirteen in 2011, but would quickly emerge as a front runner in the categories he raced in.[3] In 2015 the Indian racer would fully commit to racing in Europe, taking part in the Formula Renault 2.0 NEC, Alps and Eurocup Championships.[3] His maiden season saw him focus primarily on the NEC, finishing fifth with 194.5 points.[3]
F3 Foundation: 2016 - 2019[]
Daruvala would open his 2016 campaign with a run to second in the Toyota Racing Series, before taking on the same FR 2.0 programmes that he had in 2015.[3] Finishing fourth in the NEC, Daruvala move into the FIA Formula 3 European Championship for 2017, although he again ran in the TRS, claiming fifth.[3] Sixth at the end of the 2017 F3 Europe Championship earned Daruvala another season in the Championship for 2018.[3]
2018 saw Daruvala secure a second F3 win en-route to tenth in the Championship, while also getting a chance to run in the GP3 Series at the season finale.[3] The Indian racer duly signed up for the GP3 Series in 2019 as it transformed in the FIA Formula 3 Championship, and would go on to finish third in the inaugural F3 Championship.[3] That earned him the attention of the Red Bull, who signed the Indian racer up to the Red Bull Junior Team in February 2020.[2]
F2 Focus: 2020 - Present[]
Daruvala progressed to the FIA Formula 2 Championship in 2020, joining Carlin in what would be a two season spell that ended with three race victories and seventh in the Championship in 2021.[3] For 2022 Daruvala moved to defending Champions Prema and would collect a further race victory as he again finished seventh in the Championship, a result which saw him secure a fourth F2 campaign with MP Motorsport, but also saw the Indian pilot lose his RBJT support.[3]
Formula E History[]
Daruvala was signed by Mahindra Racing ahead of the 2022/23 ABB FIA Formula E World Championship, after the Indian registered squad pushed to sign an Indian born driver for their team.[1] Daruvala was hence signed as a test/reserve driver, primarily serving as a simulator pilot to support Lucas di Grassi and Oliver Rowland, with Daruvala later confirming that a full-time race seat in FE was his goal.[1]
