Jordan King (born 26 February 2024 in Warwick, Warwickshire, UK) is a British racing driver who serves primarily as a development and reserve driver for Mahindra Racing in the ABB FIA Formula E World Championship, a role he has held since 2020/21.[1] King would also be a two-time E-Prix starter for Mahindra, having made his debut at the 2024 Berlin E-Prix I for the Indian team during the 2023/24 season in place of Nyck de Vries.[2]
Background[]
King spent the majority of his younger life in karting, before making his debut in a race car in 2010, joining the Formula Renault UK Winter series ahead of a full campaign in 2011.[3] King would also compete in the short-lived FIA Formula Two Championship during that season, alongside his Formula Renault commitments, as well as the MRF Formula 1600 India series.[3] King won the MRF Championship at the end of 2011, and became a semi-regular point scorer in the other series.[3]
Rung Out: 2012 - 2014[]
King moved onto the NEC version of Formula Renault in 2012, while also taking part in the Eurocup sister series.[3] Second in the NEC earned King a seat in the FIA Formula 3 European Championship for 2013, as well as a full campaign in the BRDC British Formula 3 Championship.[3] King duly claimed the crown in British F3, while also securing sixth in the European series.[3] 2014 saw King dedicate all of his attention to F3 Europe, claiming seventh at the end of the season and a test in a Formula One car, while also earning a seat in the GP2 Series for the following campaign.[3]
Second Tier and American Dreams: 2015 - 2019[]
King's maiden GP2 series campaign saw the Brit claim twelfth in the Championship, having also signed with the Manor Marussia F1 Team as a development driver for the season.[3] A second GP2 campaign saw King claim his maiden win and seventh in the series, with a third campaign following in 2017 as the series transitioned to becoming the FIA Formula 2 Championship, where King would fall back to eleventh.[3] 2018 saw King move away from the European scene and move to America, completing a part-season campaign in the IndyCar Series, making eleven starts, while also moving into endurance racing with a seat in the LMP2 class in the World Endurance Championship.[3]
2019 saw King return to Europe and the FIA Formula 2 Championship, where the Brit would improve to ninth after his season away, while also making his Indy 500 debut which meant he would miss part of the F2 season.[3] King would also move up to compete in the LMP1 class in WEC with Ginetta during the 2019-20 Super Season, before focusing on becoming a development/simulator driver from 2021 onward having been unable to secure a race seat in a notable series.[3]
Formula E History[]
King first sampled an FIA Formula E Championship during the 2016/17 Formula E Season when the Brit tested for Mahindra Racing in an off-season test, before having to wait until the end of the 2018/19 season for a second test with Dragon Racing.[4] After missing out on a race seat, King's next FE chance would come in 2020/21 when Mahindra signed the British pilot up to become a development and reserve driver for the season, a role that King would perform over the next four seasons.[1]
Development Due: 2023/24[]
King would serve as Mahindra's primary development driver throughout the Spark SRT05e era of FE, and would continue that role into the Generation 3 period, while also attending most E-Prix as a reserve driver and completing rookie tests for the Indian squad.[5] Then, in 2023/24, King would finally get his chance to race an FE car, when Nyck de Vries was made unavailable for Mahindra for the 2024 Berlin E-Prix weekend due to his World Endurance Championship committments.[2] King duly moved up to replace the Dutchman in the #21 Mahindra M10Electro for the weeknd, partnering Edoardo Mortara for the two races in Berlin.[2]
King's debut saw him run in the midfield throughout, ultimately finishing the 2024 Berlin E-Prix I in twelfth position as the best of the debutantes and third of the stand-ins for the race.[6] The second Race was fairly disappointing, however, with King unable to threaten the points once the Peleton-esque race fell apart, finishing a lowly eighteenth as the worst placed of the Mahindra powered drivers.[7] After the Berlin round and the return of de Vries, King would return to his test/development duties for Mahindra, a role he would retain for 2024/25.[8]
