The Karl-Marx-Allee Circuit, alternately known as the Berlin Street Circuit was a temporary street circuit located in Berlin, Germany, that host the 2016 Berlin ePrix as a round of the 2015/16 FIA Formula E Championship.[1] Selected to host the Berlin E-Prix in 2016 after issues surrounding Tempelhof Airport, the Karl-Marx-Allee Circuit would only host one E-Prix, with the series returning to Tempelhof in 2016/17.[2]
Formula E History[]
The Karl-Marx-Allee Circuit was first proposed to host the Berlin ePrix midway through the 2015/16 season, after the Refugee Crisis of 2015 saw Tempelhof Airport, the host of the 2015 Berlin ePrix, converted to a refugee centre.[1] A new location was hence required for the Berlin race, with the area around the Strausberger Platz emerging as the favourite.[1] The Karl-Marx-Allee Circuit was hence created around the Platz, unveiled on 2 May 2016, three weeks before the 2016 Berlin ePrix.[1]
Circuit History[]
The new "Berlin Street Circuit" featured eleven corners, with the Strausberger Platz forming a centre piece for the circuit.[1] The pits and start/finish straight were located on Karl-Marx-Allee, with 2.030 km (1.261 mi) of Berlin's streets used to form an eleven corner circuit.[1] Sébastien Buemi would ultimately win the circuit's first race, before the Berlin ePrix reverted back to Tempelhof Airport for the 2017 Berlin ePrix.[2]
Circuit Layout[]
A lap of the Karl-Marx-Allee Circuit opened with a long start/finish straight, ending with a tight hairpin right, with pit-in and pit-out located on the entry and exit respectively.[1] A shorter straight along the opposite road follows, before the field hit the brakes for a left-right chicane.[1] From there a short straight carries the field to turn four, a right hand curve, turning the field onto Lichtenberger Street.[1]
The field follow Lichtenberger Street through to a pair of 90° left, which turn the field back on themselves and towards the Strausberger Platz.[1] Turn seven appears a right hand kink with turn eight a long apex left along the top of the Platz itself.[1] Turn nine sees the field kink right into a hairpin left of turn ten, which itself feeds the field into turn eleven, a long apex right to return the field onto the start/finish straight.[1]
