Loïc Duval (born 12 June 1982) is a French racing driver, who most recently competed for Dragon Racing in the 2016/17 FIA Formula E Championship.[1] Duval has experience of both the 24 Hours of Le Mans and single seaters in Formula Nippon, and joined Dragon Racing after Oriol Servià's departure from driving duties during the 2014/15 season.[2]
Duval's time in Formula E was spent entirely with Dragon Racing, with the Frenchman recording two podiums in twenty-eight starts. Ultimately, Duval would be dropped ahead of the 2017/18 season, replaced at Dragon by Neel Jani.[3]
Background[]
Duval, like most racing drivers, began his career in karting, culminating in the 2002 French Formula Campus title.[1] He followed this with the 2003 French Formula Renault Championship title in his debut season, before entering the Formula Three Euro Series the following year.[1] 2004 also saw Duval test for the Renault F1 Team in a one-off drive, before a second season in the Euro Series in 2005.[1]
A move to Japan followed in 2006, entering Formula Nippon and Super GT for the season.[1] He combined these duties with appearances in the A1 GP Series for Team France, ultimately taking the 2009 Formula Nippon title.[1] A return to Europe a year later paved the way for Duval to take his greatest victory.[1]
Legendary Le Mans[]
Duval was drafted into the Audi Sport Le Mans programme in mid-2011, combining his duties in Super GT alongside his drive in the Le Mans Series.[1] After a fifth place overall in the Le Mans Series that season, Duval committed full time to Audi's programme, taking the FIA World Endurance Championship for them in 2012.[1] This was followed by an infamous victory in the 2013 24 Hours of Le Mans, an event in which he had been competing since 2008.[1]
2014 saw Duval struggle in the WEC, combined with a huge accident at Le Mans in practice.[4] Duval walked away uninjured, but was shaken by the accident.[4] He ended the season seventh overall, while also taking fourth in Formula Nippon.[1]
Formula E History[]
Duval became the third driver to race for Dragon Racing in the inaugural 2014/15 FIA Formula E Championship, after Oriol Servià became a director at the team.[1] Duval's debut came at the 2015 Miami ePrix, where a disappointing qualifying was transformed to a seventh place finish and solid points.[5]
Duval would only retire from one his seven races in the Championship, being involved in the huge first lap incident that claimed several cars at the 2015 Monaco ePrix.[6] He responded strongly in Berlin, getting onto the podium as team mate Jérôme d'Ambrosio won the race outright, before a second podium followed at the season finale.[7] His podium helped Dragon Racing leap into second in the Teams' Championship on the final day, with Duval finishing ninth in the Drivers' Championship, despite missing the first four races.[7]
Dragon Desires[]
Duval was retained by Dragon Racing at the end of the inaugural season, partnering d'Ambrosio once again as the manufacturer backed era of FE began in 2015/16.[8] A promising pre-season with Dragon's customer Venturi cars saw Duval emerge as the best placed driver of the Venturi built quartet at the season opening race in Beijing, finishing fourth.[9] Duval's strong start to the season would see him battle for the podium in three other races before the halfway stage, with the Frenchman spending a lot of the season in the top five of the Championship.
Unfortunately, Duval's luck would change at his home race in Paris, the the Frenchman failing to finish for the first time since the 2015 Monaco ePrix.[10] Additional retirements followed in Berlin and the first race in London, with Duval falling well behind d'Ambrosio in the Championship standings.[11] Yet, the Frenchman put together a strong end to the season to once again threaten the podium, claiming fourth in the season finale to claim a top ten finish in the overall standings.[12]
Penske Power[]
For the third season in a row, Dragon Racing retained Duval and d'Ambrosio, as they partnered with Faraday Future and Penske to build their first Formula E car.[13] The new car proved to be both reliable and relatively competitive at the 2016 Donington Test, with Duval ultimately able to better d'Ambrosio on outright pace.
It was a relatively anonymous start to the season for Duval, the Frenchman's only major contribution during the first two races being his maiden fastest lap, recorded in Marrakech.[14] Things looked to be going better for Duval in Buenos Aires, with the Frenchman taking sixth place after a competitive day, although two retirements at the following two rounds due to mechanical woes dropped Duval's hopes.[15] Duval would go on to miss his home race in Paris due to his DTM drive, Mike Conway stepping in to replace him for a one-off appearance.[16]
Duval's poor form in Formula E did not go away during his break, with the Frenchman retiring from the second Berlin ePrix after failing to score in the first.[17] A fifth place in the first New York ePrix seemed to have stopped the rot, although another anonymous performance in the second race left Duval out of the points once again.[18] Duval would round out the season with fastest lap in the penultimate race of the campaign, the first Montreal ePrix, before failing to score in the finale.[19]
At the end of the season it was announced that Porsche protege Neel Jani would be joining Dragon Racing alongside d'Ambrosio, leaving Audi backed Duval without a drive in 2017/18.[20]
