The Long Beach ePrix was an annual motorsport event staged on a modified version of the Long Beach Street Circuit in Long Beach, California, USA, as a round of the FIA Formula E Championship.[1] Staged twice in 2015 and 2016, the Long Beach ePrix was the first FIA event to be staged at Long Beach since the United States Grand Prix West had been removed from the FIA Formula One World Championship in 1984.[1]
City History[]
The site of Long Beach originally fell between two Spanish ranches founded in the 16th century, which remained under Spanish control until the 1860s.[2] Long Beach (which was named as such by the "Long Beach Land and Water Company" after their purchase of William E. Willmore's failed Willmore City in the 1890s) was incorporated as a city in 1897.[2] The city grew, becoming the home of the United States Grand Prix West between 1976 and 1983 , as well as numerous ChampCar and ALMS/TUDOR United SportsCar Championship races.[2]
Formula E History[]
Long Beach was first selected to host the new FIA Formula E Championship in 2013, and duly appeared on the first provisional calendar released in December that year.[3] The Long Beach Street Circuit was subsequently picked to host the race, with a modified version of the circuit unveiled ahead of the inaugural race, scheduled for the 4 April 2015.[3] The modified version would see the field use the start finish line and second half of the full circuit, but cut through South Pine Avenue rather than head around the legendary fountain.[1]
Long Beach Legends[]
The first Long Beach ePrix would be won by Nelson Piquet Jr., his first win en-route to the 2014/15 Championship, and would fall on the 35th anniversary of his father, Nelson Piquet, Sr.'s first triumph in Formula One at the very same circuit.[4] FE would return to Long Beach for the 2015/16 season, with the race obtaining a major title sponsorship deal with tech company Faraday Future.[5] This time it was Lucas di Grassi who won the battle around the shortened circuit, although it also proved to be the series' last visit to Long Beach, having obtained a deal to race in New York City from 2016/17 onward.[6]
