Luca Ghiotto (born 24 February 1995 in Arzignano, Veneto, Italy) is an Italian racing driver who served as a test and simulator driver for the Nissan Formula E Team during the 2022/23 ABB FIA Formula E World Championship.[1] A veteran of the FIA Formula 2 Championship and sportscar driver, Ghiotto was signed by Nissan to complete their simulator work ahead of the ninth FE campaign, and would subsequently make his public FE test debut at the 2023 Rookie Test.[2]
Background[]
Ghiotto's racing career began in karting, with the Italian racer rising through the ranks to get into the KF3 European Championship at the age of thirteen, taking the title at his first attempt.[3] He would continue to compete in the KF3 class until the end of 2010, although rather than step into the World Championship scene, Ghiotto earned a spot in the Formula Abarth Championship for 2011, in which he would compete in both the Italian and European series.[3] A relatively strong season saw Ghiotto claim ninth overall in Italy, and sixth in the European edition, with his sophomore campaign in 2012 seeing Ghiotto finish as runner-up in both Formula Abarth Championships.[3]
F2 Fixture: 2013 - 2020[]
Formula Renault tempted Ghiotto for the 2013 season, with the Italian racer taking part in the Alps and NEC championships for the year.[3] It was Ghiotto's Alps campaign that proved to be the better, with the Italian just missing out on the title to compatriot Antonio Fuoco at the end of the season, although that did not stop Ghiotto from progressing to the Formula Renault 3.5 Series for 2014.[3] A difficult season would follow for the Italian pilot, finishing a lowly seventeenth, although Ghiotto would make his GP3 Series debut during the season and hence moved into GP3 full time for 2015.[3]
2015 saw Ghiotto duel with Esteban Ocon for the GP3 title, ultimately finishing second to the Frenchman, resulting in both graduating to the GP2 Series in 2016, where Ghiotto would secure one win and eighth overall in his rookie campaign.[3] 2017 saw Ghiotto swap teams as GP2 became Formula 2, where the Italian racer improved to fourth in the Championship and would get his Formula One test debut with Williams as a nominated young driver.[3] 2018 was a quiet campaign for Ghiotto as he slipped back to eighth in F2, before the Italian pilot managed to improve to third in 2019 with four wins, while a fifth F2/GP2 season in 2020 would again see Ghiotto claim a win but slip back into tenth in the Championship.[3]
GT Changes: 2021 - Present[]
Ghiotto would leave the F2 field ahead of the 2021 season, instead beginning a journey into GT racing with seats in the Italian GT Championship, ADAC GT Masters and GT World Challenge Europe for the season, securing fifth in the former as his best result.[3] 2022 saw Ghiotto make the GT World Challenge his main project, finishing tenth, while also making cameo appearances in F2 and the IMSA SportsCar Championship albeit without major success.[3]
Formula E History[]
Ghiotto would sign with the Nissan Formula E Team ahead of the 2022/23 ABB FIA Formula E World Championship, with the Japanese squad employing the Italian pilot as their simulator driver.[1] That ultimately led to Ghiotto being offered a seat at the 2023 Rookie Test with the Japanese manufacturer, where an impressive run saw Ghiotto set the fourth fastest time of the day and complete several race length simulations.[2]
