Luke Browning (born 31 January 2002 in Kingsley, Cheshire, United Kingdom) is a British racing driver, who served as a test driver for the NEOM McLaren Formula E Team during the 2022/23 ABB FIA Formula E World Championship.[1] The 2022 GB3 Championship Champion and member of the Williams Driver Academy, Browning would get his first sample of FE at the 2023 Rookie Test and set the eighth fastest time overall.[2]
Background[]
Browning would take a relatively unusual root into motorsport, beginning his career in the Junior Saloon Car Championship at the age of fourteen rather than begin as most aspiring drivers did in karting.[3] Claiming one win and ninth overall, Browning moved to the Ginetta Junior Championship for 2017, although it would take until his sophomore season in Ginetta's for Browning to show his true potential, finishing third with eight victories having challenged for the title throughout.[3] For 2019 Browning would make the jump to single-seaters, with the F4 British Championship his home for a season which brought him two wins and sixth in the final standings.[3]
Home Hopes: 2020 - Present[]
Browning remained in British F4 for the 2020 season, and with a year's worth of experience would go on to claim the Championship title in a heavily disrupted campaign.[3] 2021 saw a move to the continent and a run to third in the ADAC Formula 4 Championship, although Browning would also gain experience of the sister Italian F4 Championship and a first taste of F3 level racing in the GB3 Championship.[3] After spending the winter competing in the UAE F4 series, finishing eighth, Browning moved into the GB3 Championship full time in 2022 where he would ultimately claim the title on the final day.[3]
2023 saw Browning again move up the ladder, this time heading to the FIA Formula 3 Championship with Hitech Grand Prix.[3]
Formula E History[]
Browning's ABB FIA Formula E World Championship debut came at the behest of the NEOM McLaren Formula E Team, who signed the British youth alongside Charlie Eastwood to take part in the 2023 Rookie Test in Berlin, Germany.[1] Taking over the #5 Nissan e-FORCE 04 of Jake Hughes, Browning would impress at times during the test, outpacing Eastwood by over half a second and setting the eighth fastest time of the day.[2]
