Ma Qing Hua, born 25 December 1987, is a Chinese racing driver, whom competed with NIO Formula E Team during the 2017/18 FIA Formula E Championship.[1] Renowned as the first Chinese registered driver to win an FIA sanctioned World Championship race, Ma made his début in Formula E at the 2016 Paris ePrix.[2]
Ma has competed in the FE Championship for Team Aguri and Techeetah, although his pace for the latter was not up to spec during 2016/17, meaning he would be replaced after the first three races by ex-Formula One racer Esteban Gutiérrez.[3] Ma ultimately left Techeetah having been overlooked ahead of the 2017/18 season, with André Lotterer joining the outfit instead.[4]
However, Ma instead signed up for the works backed NIO Formula E Team for 2017/18, getting listed as their main test/reserve driver.[5] This would ultimately lead to Ma getting an unlikely return to the series at the 2018 Paris E-Prix, replacing Luca Filippi.[6] The Chinese racer would also stand-in for Oliver Turvey in New York, but failed to score at all.[7]
Background[]
Ma's first appearance on the world driving scene came in 2005, making his European début in the Italian Formula 3000 Championship.[8] A season in the A1 Grand Prix Series followed, Ma making two appearances for Team China, with the following few seasons seeing Ma take on several Championships from Formula Renault to Formula 3.[8] A return to his native China in 2011 saw Ma make his début in Touring Cars, a profitable move as he claimed his first major Championship title, while also successfully negotiating with HRT to test drive their cars in Formula One.[8]
Ma's F1 involvement would see him make five outings during Grand Prix weekends, four for HRT and one in 2013 for Caterham.[2] Failed contract negotiations saw Ma move out of the F1 scene at the end of the season, before he signed up with Citroën to be part of their WTCC squad for 2014.[9] A stunning début saw the Chinese racer claim victory in the second race of his début weekend, although that would be his only taste of the podium during his half-season.[9] Yet, his pace was strong and he was signed up for a full WTCC season for 2015, claiming three wins for the French manufacturer on his way to fourth in the Championship.[2]
Formula E History[]
During the middle of the 2015/16. Team Aguri were in negotiations with Chinese Media Capital over investment in the build-up to the 2016 Paris ePrix.[1] As part of the new deal, Ma joined Team Aguri to drive their second pair of Spark-Renault SRT_01Es for the rest of the season, taking over from Mexican Salvador Duran.[1] Unfortunately for Ma his début in Paris would not end in glory, as he crashed heavily into the barrier on the exit of turn fourteen near the end of the ePrix, running at the back of the field.[10]
The rest of the 2015/16 season would prove to be a rather quiet affair for Ma, although he did improve his finishing position in every race, only just missing out on the points at the season finale in London.[11] Ma's twelfth place finish in the 2016 London ePrix II was enough to see him beat Duran and Rast, who had also been in the Aguri car, although it would also be a pointless season for the Chinese racer.[11]
Techeetah Teaching[]
Ma, unsurprisingly, would be retained by CMC as they renamed Team Aguri to Techeetah, with the Chinese racer partnered by Jean-Éric Vergne for 2016/17.[12] Armed with a pair of Renault Z.E. 16s at the 2016 Donington Test, Ma proved that he could push the cars potential, although he could not match the outright pace of his new teammate.
Ma's season would get off to the worst possible start at the 2016 Hong Kong ePrix, the Chinese racer taken out at the start by a lunging Lucas di Grassi, who pushed Ma over the back of Daniel Abt.[13] Ma fared only slightly better in Marrakech, completely flattened by his teammate in qualifying, but did manage to see the chequered flag, albeit at the back of the field.[14] Things hardly improved in Buenos Aires for Ma, a crash in qualifying meaning he would start at the back of the grid, a place he would stay in come the chequered flag.[15]
Ma's miserable form gave Techeetah the opportunity to draft in ex-Formula One racer Esteban Gutiérrez ahead of the Mexico City ePrix, with Ma dropped to being the team's reserve driver.[3] However, Ma would be overlooked just three rounds later when Gutiérrez abandoned the team for a seat in IndyCar, as Techeetah obtained Stéphane Sarrazin's services for the rest of the campaign.[16] Ma was once again overlooked ahead of the 2017/18 season, with Techeetah opting to bring Porsche backed racer André Lotterer to partner Vergne, leaving Ma without a drive once again.[4]
NIO Nearly-man[]
Ma was signed up as the NIO Formula E Team reserve driver for the 2017/18 season, with the Chinese racer also serving as a development driver for their season five creation.[5] Ultimately, NIO decided to give Ma a drive at the 2018 Paris E-Prix in place of Luca Filippi, although the Chinese racer was well off the pace of teammate Oliver Turvey.[17] Ma was again called upon at the season finale in New York City, replacing an injured Turvey for the season ending race.[18] Unfortunately, Ma would again fail to score, and was set to lose his NIO reserve seat for 2018/19.[7]
