The Mahindra M2Electro was an all-electric, single-seater racing car that was developed by Mahindra & Mahindra to compete in the 2015/16 FIA Formula E Championship for their factory supported Mahindra Racing effort.[1] Effectively an evolution of the Spark-Renault SRT_01E, with Mahindra having commissioned McLaren Applied Technologies to evolve their design, the M2Electro would prove to be a reliable mid-tier powertrain, claiming two podium finishes and numerous points finishes, but was largely unable to challenge for race victories.[2]
Competitive History[]
The M2Electro would open its FIA Formula E Championship campaign at the start of the 2015/16 season, where Nick Heidfeld piloted the #23 M2Electro to the podium in the season opening 2015 Beijing ePrix.[3] Its second appearance would see the car run in the points throughout, Heidfeld and Bruno Senna both scoring points in Putrajaya, before Oliver Rowland made his debut in the car in place of Heidfeld at the 2015 Punta del Este ePrix after the German pilot sustained a wrist injury in Malaysia.[4] That proved to be a pointless day for the M2Electro, although it returned to form with Senna and Heidfeld both claiming points in Buenos Aires, a result they then almost completely matched in Mexico City.[5]
The 2016 Long Beach ePrix proved to be the most competitive for the M2Electro, with the pair running in the lead group throughout, before ultimately finishing in fourth and fifth with Senna just keeping Sam Bird at bay for the latter position.[6] Fewer points would come in Paris and Berlin, although both Heidfeld and Senna would secure bonus points for fastest lap in each of those ePrix, showing the potential the M2Electro had over one-lap.[7] At the season finale in London Senna scored his first podium of the season, a distant second in the first race, before both would finish in the top ten in the 2016 London ePrix II to complete the season on 105 points combined, enough to leave Mahindra Racing in fifth in the Teams' Championship.[2]
Development History[]
Amid an interest in constructing their own powertrain for the Formula E Championship, Mahindra & Mahindra would commission the powertrain suppliers for the Spark-Renault SRT_01E, namely McLaren Applied Technologies and Hewland to create an updated version of their original designs.[8] McLaren would produce a lightened version of their eMotor with an updated software package and revised inverters, while Hewland made revisions to the gearbox, including removing one of the gears to make it four-speed and reduce its weight.[8] Otherwise the design was largely identical to the original design, with Mahindra taking the opportunity to put their own name on the design as a result.[9]
