The Mahindra M3Electro was an all-electric, single-seater, racing car which was used by Mahindra Racing during the 2016/17 FIA Formula E Championship, based on the Spark-Renault SRT_01E Evo design.[1] Developed by Magneti Marelli at the behest of Mahindra, the M3Electro would claim one victory courtesy of Felix Rosenqvist and would ultimately be the best of Mahindra's cars in terms of Championship results proving to be a frequent podium challenger.[2]

The M3Electro was also closely related to the Penske 701-EV, which used the same hardware as the M3Electro as a re-badged design by Penske but would be run by Dragon Racing with their own software with technical expertise provided by Faraday Future.[3]

Competitive History[]

Development History[]

For their second official powertrain design Mahindra would follow the same philosophy as they had with the Mahindra M2Electro and would commission a third party to construct their design, this time via the expertise of Magneti Marelli.[4] The Marelli design would unite two 3-phase motors together to create a six-phase design within a single casing, although this would also require the use of two inverters in order to compensate for the extra phases.[5] That inverter would use silicon-carbide switches initially developed for use in Formula One, while the motor design ensured that there was less wire used, resulting in effectively more efficiency from the design as there was less opportunity for powerloss.[5]

This motor was mounted transversely and was in essence a dual-motor design due to the nature of the six-phase unit, which was then bolted to a two-speed gearbox for optimal efficiency, with a lower gear for launches and a longer second gear for the rest of the race.[5]
