The Mahindra M9Electro is a single-seater electric racing car developed by ZF and Mahindra & Mahindra in order to compete in the 2022/23 ABB FIA Formula E World Championship, based on the Spark Generation 3 design.[1][2] The first Gen 3 design to have publicly run, having completed a demo run at the 2022 Goodwood Festival of Speed, the M9Electro was used by Mahindra's factory squad, Mahindra Racing, with a second pair of M9s also run by ABT Sportsline, in a deal that also allowed the German team to help with the development of the M9's powertrain.[3]
Competitive History[]
The M9Electro made its first public appearance at the Goodwood Festival of Speed in June 2022, using what was an non-homologation edition of the M9's eventual powertrain.[2] The M9 would go on to feature in the midfield during the pre-season 2022 Valencia Test, before making its full ABB FIA Formula E World Championship debut at the 2022/23 season opener in Mexico City.[4] There, Lucas di Grassi scored a somewhat shock pole position on his debut for the factory Mahindra Racing squad, making the M9Electro the first pole sitting car of the Gen 3 era, although relatively high energy consumption meant that the Brazilian would eventually slip to third during the race.[4]
At the 2023 Cape Town E-Prix an inherent fault on the M9Electro's rear suspension was discovered, caused by a combination of the bumps and high-speed nature of the Cape Town Street Circuit and was first diagnosed on the #51 ABT Cupra entry for Nico Müller after FP2.[5] After an investigation from Mahindra's engineers on Müller's car, further checks on the other #4 ABT Cupra of Kelvin van der Linde and the two factory entries of di Grassi and Oliver Rowland revealed that a structual component that had been outsourced by Mahindra and ZF when developing the M9Electro.[5] As a result both Mahindra and ABT would withdraw their cars before the qualifying for the Cape Town E-Prix, with plans to conduct a full investigation and potential redesign for components of the M9Electro's rear suspension before the 2023 São Paulo E-Prix.[6]
Development History[]
The M9Electro was among the first Generation 3 ruleset based cars to begin real world testing, with Mahindra Racing conducting several tests in the summer of 2022, with customers ABT Sportsline joining them soon after a deal for the German squad to use Mahindra powertrains was concluded.[1][3] Yet, despite the early start, and an early public unveiling at the Goodwood Festival of Speed, the M9Electro which was developed between Mahindra & Mahindra and their technical partners ZF would not be at the head of the field during the pre-season 2022 Valencia Test, although Oliver Rowland would set the fifth fastest time of the test.[7] The M9Electro would, however, prove reliable with over 1,600 km completed by the factory team alone, and only minor issues needing the attention of the ZF engineers within the Mahindra and ABT Cupra teams during the test.[7]
