Matthew Campbell, (born 17 February 1995 in Warwick, Queensland, Australia) is an Australian racing driver and factory Porsche driver, who took part as a test driver for the Porsche Formula E Team during the 2023/24 ABB FIA Formula E World Championship.[1] A long serving member of Porsche's driver programme and member of their factory backed effort in the World Endurance Championship, Campbell would make his maiden FE test appearance at the 2024 Misano E-Prix I, taking part in a free practice session designed specifically for rookie drivers.[1]
Background[]
Campbell began his career racing in his native Australia at the age of fourteen, racing a Datsun 1200 coupe before securing enough backing to enter the Queensland Formula Ford Championship in 2011, a title he would claim in dominant fashion a year later.[2] The Australian youth would compete in the national Formula Ford category for the next two years, before moving into the Porsche GT3 Cup Challenge Australia in 2014, finishing fourth with three victories, as well as run in several rounds of the Australian GT Championship.[2] A season later and Campbell would emerge as a title contender in the Australian Carrera Cup Championship, finishing third with six victories, before winning the Carrera Cup Australia title in 2016 having won over half of the seasons' races, and having made his debut in the International V8 Supercars Championship later in the season.[2]
Porsche's Path: 2017 - 2022[]
2017 saw Porsche take an interest in Campbell's career, with the Australian racer moving to the Porsche Supercup for the season, with four wins in his rookie season seeing Campbell claim third in the championship, with other appearances in the Porsche Carrera Cup Germany and in Supercars.[2] 2018 saw Campbell continue his international career, making a class winning debut at the 24 Hours of Le Mans to boot, before earning a full seat in the 2018-19 FIA World Endurance Championship Super-Season with Dempsey-Proton Racing, finishing second in the LMGTE AM class.[2] Promoted to a full Porsche factory driver, Campbell would spend 2019 bouncing between various paddocks at the behest of the German manufacturer, racking up starts and podia in the Blancpain GT Series, ADAC GT Masters, IMSA Sportscar Championship and Intercontinental GT Challenge, as well as run to eighth in the LMGTE-AM class in WEC once again.[2]
2020 would see Campbell narrow down his focus to the GT World Challenge Europe, finishing second and the International GT Challenge, earning Campbell another runner-up spot, with other select appearances in the IMSA Sportscar Championship for the factory Porsche team.[2] 2021 was another campaign which saw Campbell move around various paddocks, although a strong campaign in WEC saw him claim third in the LMGTE Am class, as well as claim multiple victories in IMSA.[2] A saw to Porsche's IMSA programme full time in 2022 saw Campbell earn his first major Championship title since his Carrera cup days, winning the GTD Pro class title with five victories, while also claiming gold at the FIA Motorsport Games in the GT Sprint category.[2]
Hypercar Hopes: 2023 - Present[]
In 2023 Campbell was rewarded for his service in Porsche's GT programme with a promotion to their Hypercar programme, entering IMSA in the GTP class for the first time and ending up fifth overall with one win, as well as serve as their main reserve in WEC.[2] For 2024 Campbell earned a promotion to the full WEC Porsche programme, at the cost of his IMSA role, where the Australian driver would end up in fifth having claimed two podium finishes, enough to prompt Porsche to retain his services for 2025 in their Hypercar programme.[2]
Formula E History[]
Campbell, in his role as a factory Porsche driver, was offered a drive in their 2023/24 ABB FIA Formula E World Championship challenger, the Porsche 99X Electric Gen 3, alongside Porsche's FE development drivers Thomas Preining and Dennis Hauger.[1] His chance came in the rookie free practice session held at the 2024 Misano E-Prix I, where Campbell would set the fifth fastest time, albeit one with Attack Mode that was only fractionally faster than his best effort without the additional power.[3]
