Mattia Drudi (born 16 July 1998 in Rimini, Emilia-Romagna, Italy) is an Italian racing driver, who served as a test driver for the Audi Sport ABT Schaeffler team during the 2019/20 ABB FIA Formula E Championship.[1] A factory Audi driver after joining their customer racing programme, Drudi would take part in the 2020 Rookie Test for the Ingolstadt marque.[1]
Background[]
Drudi's career began in karting, with the Italian youth competing in his native Italy and then across Europe through to the end of 2013.[2] In 2014 Drudi graduated to single seaters, running to second in the Italian F4 Championship, before a move to the Porsche Carrera Cup Italia in 2015.[2] Drudi would run to third in the Porsche Cup Italia, while also securing fourteenth in a partial campaign in the ADAC Formel 4.[2]
Sports Car Sampling: 2016 - 2021[]
2016 saw Drudi commit to the Carrera Cup full time, taking second in the Italia series, while also securing several appearances in the Porsche Supercup.[2] The following season would see Drudi only make a handful of appearances in various Porsche series, before a full campaign in the Supercup in 2018, finishing fifth alongside a couple of runouts in the European Le Mans Series.[2] In 2019 Drudi joined the Audi roster of factory drivers, with the German marque deploying Drudi's services in several series including the Italian GT Championship, Blancpain GT Series and ADAC GT Masters, although Drudi would not secure a victory outside of a class win in the VLN.[2]
The 2020 season saw more success for Drudi in his Audi customer role, with the Italian racer securing victories in the VLN and Italian GT Championship while also finishing in sixth in the 24 Hours of Nürburgring.[2]
Formula E History[]
Drudi would be offered the chance to test for the Audi Sport ABT Schaeffler squad ahead of the 2020 Rookie Test, midway through the 2019/20 ABB FIA Formula E Championship.[1] The Italian racer would use the #11 car of Lucas di Grassi at the test, and would set the twelfth best time in the test, four tenths slower than test teammate Kelvin van der Linde.[3]
