The Mercedes-EQ Silver Arrow 02 is an all-electric, single seater, racing car, used by the Mercedes-EQ Formula E Team and ROKiT Venturi Racing during the 2021/22 ABB FIA Formula E World Championship.[1][2] Based on the Spark SRT05e base chassis and armed with a powertrain developed by Mercedes-Benz, the Silver Arrow 02 is set to become the most successful car in FE history, having already been piloted to the 2020/21 World Championship in the hands of Nyck de Vries.[3]
Competitive History[]
The Silver Arrow 02 made its public debut at the 2020 Valencia Test, when the factory Mercedes-EQ Formula E Team fielded Nyck de Vries and Stoffel Vandoorne at the Test in their pair of cars, alongside a pair of Silver Arrow 02s which had been sold to the ROKiT Venturi Racing squad.[4] After a strong showing in the test, a quartet of Silver Arrow 02s would make their race debuts at the 2020/21 Formula E World Championship season opener, the 2021 Diriyah E-Prix I, where de Vries claimed a maiden pole and victory for the new car, backed up by Edoardo Mortara in a sister Silver Arrow 02 run by Venturi.[5] There would be drama on the Silver Arrow 02's second race, however, as a throttle issue caused Mortara to crash heavily in practice, ruling him out of the 2021 Diriyah E-Prix II, while de Vries, Vandoorne and Norman Nato could only score a handful of points after starting at the back of the field.[6]
Mercedes' Marvel: 2020/21[]
A Double Delight?: 2021/22[]
The two year homologation rule, implemented in response to the Covid-19 Pandemic, meant that the Silver Arrow 02 would remain in service for the 2021/22 World Championship, with Mercedes and Venturi again running a quartet of Silver Arrow 02s between them.[1][2]
Development History[]
The Mercedes-EQ Silver Arrow 02 entered development towards the end of 2019, and would be heavily based on its predecessor, the Mercedes-Benz EQ Silver Arrow 01, albeit with various updates to the invertors and motors.[7] Mercedes had considered waiting to launch the Silver Arrow 02 until partway through the 2020/21 season, after the Silver Arrow 01 had won its last race, although the team ultimately decided to go ahead with the new powertrain after it passed the required safety tests in October 2020.[8]
