The Mexico City E-Prix is an annual motorsports event staged at the Autódromo Hermanos Rodríguez in Mexico City, Mexico, that serves as a round of the ABB FIA Formula E Championship.[1] Mexico City was added to the 2015/16 season calendar in late November 2015, hosting the inaugural Mexico City ePrix on 12 March 2016, and has remained on the calendar ever since.[2]
The Mexico City E-Prix has appeared on every FE calendar since its debut in 2016, although the 2021 edition of the race would be cancelled due to the Covid-19 Pandemic.[3] The race would return in 2022, however, and would go on to be the first race of the Generation 3 era when the Mexico City E-Prix staged the first E-Prix of the 2022/23 season.[4]
City History[]
Mexico City was originally founded by the Mexica people during the fourteenth century, and became the centre for the Spanish colonialists after their arrival in the early sixteenth century.[5] The city was rebuilt after a number of sieges, with steady growth until the Mexican-American wars of the nineteenth century, although that also proved to be a minor hindrance, with further growth into the twentieth century.[5] Mexico City was also the home of the failed Mexican Revolution between 1910 and 1920, before becoming one of the biggest and fastest growing cities in the world by the twenty-first century.[5]
Formula E History[]
The Mexico City ePrix circuit uses the famed, and newly rebuilt, Autódromo Hermanos Rodríguez as a base, running on a modified version of the Oval circuit.[1]
Circuit History[]
The Autódromo Hermanos Rodríguez laid dormant to the Motor racing World after the mid-1990s, with only local and American continental championships using the circuit.[1] Investment in the 2010s saw the promise of a return for the Mexican Grand Prix in 2015, with the World Motor Sport Council announcing shortly after that race that Formula E would use the circuit as part of the 2015/16.[1]
Circuit Layout[]
The Mexico City ePrix circuit uses the famed, and newly rebuilt, Autódromo Hermanos Rodríguez as a base, running on a modified version of the Oval circuit.[1] Chicanes run either side of the long turn three (the first turn of the Oval), with the drivers then turning into the new Stadium section, following the Grand Prix layout.[1] The drivers then exit the stadium to run through the remains of the Peraltada corner, which features a chicane to slow the cars before they re-join the main straight.[1] For the 2022/23 Season a new chicane has been added in order to slow down the now much faster Gen 3 cars, this has added roughly 4-5 seconds of lap time, even with the much faster and lighter Gen3 cars compared to the Gen2 cars.
