The Miami ePrix is a former motorsport event, that was hosted as the fifth round of the 2014/15 FIA Formula E Championship on the Biscayne Bay Street Circuit in Miami, Florida, USA.[1] The first ever ePrix to be staged in North America, the Miami ePrix was staged once on 14 March 2015, and would not be staged again after issues regarding the location of the circuit.[2]

After a ten year absence the Miami E-Prix would return during the 2024/25 season, with the Homestead-Miami Speedway chosen to host the city's second E-Prix.[3]

City History[]

An indigenous site before the arrival of the Europeans in 1556, the Miami area became the key city in the state of Florida, with Britain and Spain alternating in their control of the emerging town until the 1800s.[4] Officially incorporated as a city in 1896, Miami was named for the nearby Miami River, with the railroad built within the city.[4] Miami is also one of the fastest growing cities in history, with the population exploding from 1,000 in 1896 to 5.5 million in 2006.[4]

Formula E History[]

The 2015 Miami ePrix was held on 14 March 2015, becoming the first ePrix to be held in North America having been included in the first ever Formula E calendar.[5] After Jean-Éric Vergne became the first ever pole sitter Miami, Nicolas Prost took victory and the lead in the championship, with Scott Speed coming second on his debut.[6]

Miami would not feature on an FE calendar in subsequent seasons, until the series explored a potential return during the Generation 3 era, as a result of the increasing interest in Miami courtesy of Formula One and its use of the Miami International Autodrome and the increasing speed of the Gen 3 cars.[7] After a few negotiations the series agreed a deal with the Homestead-Miami Speedway to host the return of the Miami E-Prix which would duly return for the 2024/25 season, serving as the fifth round ten years after the inaugural race.[3] That race, the 2025 Miami E-Prix that was staged on the in-field circuit of the oval and with an additional chicane added to better suit FE's requirements, would see Pascal Wehrlein secure victory as a red flag late on caused chaos with Attack Mode.[8]

Circuit History[]

The Miami ePrix circuit was revealed a few weeks prior to the start of the meeting, centred around the American Airlines Stadium, home of Miami Heat.[1] The circuit itself was not a spectacular hit, measuring 2.169 km (1.348 mi) and was almost exclusively made up of 90° turns in downtown Miami.[1]

For the return of the Miami E-Prix the series would use the Homestead-Miami Speedway and its pre-existing infield layout, albeit with the addition of a chicane on the back-straight to allow an extra re-generation point for the field.[7] This tweaked layout would measure 3.551 km (2.206 mi) in length and featured fifteen turns, and would ultimately be well regarded by drivers after the race.[9]
