Mikel Azcona Troyas (born 25 June 1996 in Arrigorriaga, Basque County, Spain) is a Spanish racing driver, who served as a test driver for the NIO 333 Racing team as well as its successor, the ERT Formula E Team in successive seasons.[1] The final World Touring Car Cup Champion and a former competitor in the short-lived ETCR series, Azcona completed four tests for the Chinese team, completing 3 rookie test sessions, as well as a single free-practice session for rookies at the 2024 Misano E-Prix I.[1]
Background[]
Beginning his career in karting at the age of six, Azcona completed in various series at both national and European level, before competing in various Clio Cup series from the age of fifteen, deciding that would be a better career path than single seaters.[2] 2014 saw Azcona claim the runner-up spot in the Renault Clio Eurocup, followed by title challenges in the SEAT Leon Eurocup, Renault Clio Cup Spain and Audi Sport TT Cup in every season between 2015 and 2017, with the Spaniard claiming multiple victories.[2] In 2018 Azcona moved up to compete in the TCR Europe Touring Car Series, where the Spaniard won the title on his first attempt, despite only claiming one victory.[2]
TCR Touring Ace: 2019 - Present[]
For 2019 Azcona would enter the World Touring Car Cup as his main programme, finishing sixth with a single victory, as well as a run in the Spanish TCR Series.[2] 2020 saw him again run in WTCC, finishing seventh, as well as claim second in the Spanish TCR Series, while also making a part-season run in the TCR Europe and Italian TCR series, claiming wins in all four series.[2] In 2021 Azcona would successfully reclaim his European TCR crown, win another race in the World Touring Car Cup, and become the first driver to win a round of the new Pure ETCR Championship, an electric series based on the TCR ruleset.[2]
2022 saw Azcona claim what proved to be the final WTCC crown having become a factory Hyundai driver, while also claiming a further victory in ETCR in what proved to be that series' final edition too.[2] In 2023 Azcona raced in various series while focusing on the WTCC's replacement, the TCR World Tour, while also claiming victories in numerous other TCR based series, a campaign he would repeat in 2024 having retained his affiliation with Hyundai.[2]
Formula E History[]
Azcona was gifted his first chance to test a ABB FIA Formula E World Championship car during the 2022/23 season, when NIO 333 Racing offered him the chance to partner Daniil Kvyat at the 2023 Rookie Test in Berlin.[3] An intense day saw Azcona complete almost 100 laps of the Tempelhofring for the Chinese squad, and while outpaced by his former Formula One racer teammate, Azcona would steadily close up on his temporary teammate's benchmark.[4] That result prompted NIO, which became the ERT Formula E Team for 2023/24 season, to hire the Spanish rookie to run as one of their drivers in the pre-season 2023 Valencia Test, which featured an unique rule requiring all teams to field a rookie in either of their cars.[1]
Ultimately disruption during the test would see Azcona not get to take to the circuit, although ERT would field the Spaniard at the 2024 Rookie Test, partnering him with compatriot Marta García, as well as complete the rookie free practice session at the 2024 Misano E-Prix I.[1] Azcona would be in the mid-pack in the FP0 session in Misano, while the Rookie Test in Berlin once again saw Azcona set some initially strong laps, although as the day wore on the Spaniard slowly slipped down the order to eighteen, just a couple of tenths ahead of García.[5]
