Miki Koyama (小山 美姫 in Japanese; born 5 September 1997 in Yokohama, Kanagawa Prefecture, Japan) is a Japanese racing driver who served as a test driver for the Lola Yamaha ABT Formula E Team during the 2024/25 ABB FIA Formula E World Championship.[1] Koyama made her FE bow at the 2024 Jarama Test with the Anglo-Japanese squad as their sole entry in the women's only session staged during the trip to Jarama.[1]
Background[]
Koyama's career began in karting in her native Japan, before signing up to the Formula Toyota Racing School prior to her maiden season in car racing in 2015, when the Japanese youth secured a seat in the Japanese F4 Championship towards the end of the season.[2] Koyama would complete partial campaigns in both 2015 and 2016 in Japanese F4, before getting a chance at a full season in 2017, although Koyama would fail to score points, a feat she would finally achieve in 2018 in what was her fourth season in F4.[2] In 2019 Koyama secured a seat in the inaugural W Series championship, claiming seventh in the championship having been a semi-frequent point scorer, alongside appearances in F4 Japan and the F3 Asian series.[2]
Expanded Horizons: 2020 - Present[]
For 2020 Koyama would have to find an alternative to W Series due to the Covid-19 Pandemic cancelling the series, with Koyama instead making a cameo in the Formula Regional Japanese Championship.[2] 2021 saw a return for the W Series and Koyama along with it, although a low-key campaign saw Koyama slip to fourteenth in the series while also making her debut in the Super Formula Lights series.[2] 2022 saw a return for Koyama in the FR Japanese Championship, where Koyama made history as the first female driver to win an FIA sanctioned Formula championship that was not exclusively for female drivers, claiming seven wins in her most successful campaign.[2]
2023 saw Koyama graduate to the Super GT series in the GT300 class, entering five rounds, while also making her Macau debut and a run in the TGR GR86/BRZ Cup, albeit without much success in any of the series.[2] 2024 saw a Koyama make another handful of appearances in Super GT, having mainly focused on a run to second in the Lamborghini Super Trofeo Asia series having finished on the podium at all bar one of the races.[2]
Formula E History[]
Koyama was called up to test for the new Lola Yamaha ABT Formula E Team in the build-up to the 2024 Jarama Test, after the ABB FIA Formula E World Championship had stipulated a requirement for all teams to enter at least one female driver in a session at the test.[1] Koyama would ultimately be the only female driver entered by ABT Lola for the session, although at the wheel of Lucas di Grassi's #11 Lola T001 the Japanese pilot would set the fourth fastest time of the session, completing 31 tours of the Spanish circuit.[3]
