The Misano E-Prix, officially known as the ABB Formula E Misano E-Prix, was a motorsport event held twice as part of the ABB FIA Formula E World Championship during the 2023/24 season.[1] The Misano E-Prix was a late replacement for the tenth FE Season after the decision to cancel the Rome E-Prix on safety grounds after issues with the Circuito Cittadino dell’EUR.[2]
After one season on the calendar the Misano E-Prix was dropped for the 2024/25 season, with no round in Italy staged in season eleven.[3]
City History[]
Misano's origins can be found after the conquest of the Rimini area by Rome, which resulted in the settlement known as Pieve of Saint Biagio, being recorded in 997 centred around a small 'pieve' or church that soon became known as Misano Monte.[4] The emerging village would be controlled by the Malatesta and would be guarded by a castle between 1295 and 1528, before becoming part of the Papal State after becoming a Muncicipality with autonomous powers.[4] However, frequent financial turmoil meant that its autonomy was withdrawn numerous times and the town linked to various other cities, until finally regaining autonomy in 1827.[4]
Tourist Taps: 1827 - Present[]
Misano's autonomy would survive through to the present day with a heavy focus on tourism, surviving a request from Cattolica in the Rimini region in 1935 to annex the town, with the town's name changing to Villa Vittoria in 1938, before the town was heavily damaged during the Second World War.[4] During its rebuilding phase post-war the town was renamed again to its current full name, Misano Adriatico, and would emerge as a major tourist hub for the east coast of Italy.[4] Indeed, significant population growth in the latter-half of the twentieth century saw various tourist and sporting structurs built around the town, with the Misano World Circuit Marco Simoncelli opened in 1972 which serves as the main attraction to the town.[4]
Formula E History[]
Misano was one of a number of venues to be considered by Formula E to replace Rome as a host city for the 2023/24 season, after a report into the 2023 Rome E-Prix II cited safety issues with the Circuito Cittadino dell’EUR.[2] Misano eventually won the tussle, after Imola and the Vallelunga Circuit near Rome itself were considered, with the Misano World Circuit Marco Simoncelli outside of the town chosen to host the town's races, rather than setup a circuit within the town itself.[1] The town was given two dates on the Season Ten calendar, 13 and 14 April 2024, with the two races won by Oliver Rowland and Pascal Wehrlein respectively, with both races briefly holding the record for the fastest ever E-Prix to be staged.[5]
Circuit History[]
The Misano E-Prix was exclusively staged at the Misano World Circuit Marco Simoncelli, a purpose built circuit which was altered to accommodate FE's specific needs.[6] The circuit would also host a pre-race rookie test as part of its debut, only the second circuit after the Circuito Cittadino dell’EUR to do so.[6]
