Nathanaël Berthon, born 1 July 1989, is a French born racing driver, who competed in the first three round of the 2015/16 FIA Formula E Championship for Team Aguri.[1] Berthon got his first taste of the series during the Donington Test in the summer of 2015, before making his debut at the season opening 2015 Beijing ePrix alongside António Félix da Costa.
Berthon made a successful debut, scoring points, but two retirements at the following two rounds saw tension arise between the Frenchman and his employers.[2] The two mutually agreed to go their separate ways ahead of the 2016 Buenos Aires ePrix, with Berthon vowing to make a return to FE in the near future.[2]
Background[]
Berthon began his karting career in 2006, taking third in Copa Campeones Trophy ICA class, fifth in the French Championship Elite category, eighth in the South Garda Winter Cup KF1 and 13th in the World Cup KF1 categories.
He graduated to single seaters in 2008, the highlights of his career being an overall third place finish in the 2009 Formula Renault 2.0 West European Cup and a seventh place overall in the 2010 Formula Renault 3.5 season (consisting of a win and four podiums).
GP2 Series[]
In 2011, Berthon graduated to the GP2 Series, with Racing Engineering. The highlights of his career in GP2 were a win with Trident Racing in the 2013 sprint race at the Hungaroring and a podium finish in the 2015 sprint race in Bahrain, despite pressure from Alexander Rossi in the closing stages.
Formula E History[]
Along with fellow French drivers Nicolas Lapierre and Tom Dillman, Berthon partook in the 2015 Donington Test with Team Aguri. He was announced as the team's second driver on 17 October 2015, partnering António Félix da Costa in the #77 cars after an impressive display in the first week of testing, out-performing his countrymen by a fair margin.[3] A strong debut saw Berthon claim points in his maiden ePrix at Beijing, but two non-scores in the following two, while da Costa challenged for the podium, put Berthon's future in doubt.[4] He duly left the team in the build up to the 2016 Buenos Aires ePrix, thanking the team for his debut, with Salvador Duran ultimately taking up the vacant seat.[2]
