The NextEV FormulaE 002 was an all-electric, single-seater, racing car design developed by NextEV that competed in the 2016/17 FIA Formula E Championship with the factory backed NextEV NIO team.[1] A complete redesign of NIO's 2015/16 design, the FormulaE 002, which was also tested as the 700R, would prove to be a regular point scorer during the season, although a lack of outright pace meant it rarely challenged for the podium.[2]

Competitive History[]

Development History[]

Having decided that their first powertrain, the NextEV FormulaE 001 had been rather ineffective, NextEV decided to go in a different path for the FormulaE 002, commissioning Omnigear to develop a completely new powertrain, albeit with the same concept.[3] Indeed, the pancake style Axial flux eMotors were completely torn down and redesigned by Omnigear, which resulted in a much lighter design and an all new inverter to go with them, while the American firm also managed to design a spur gear system to mount the two motors transversely and also remove the need for a gearbox.[3] This was then packed into single carbon-fibre casing, further reducing weight, although as a consequence of this packaging the eMotors were mounted above the battery meaning the car did end up with a higher centre of gravity than was considered optimal.[3]

The car would also begin testing as the 700R with Ben Hanley, Nelson Piquet Jr. and Oliver Turvey all taking turns developing it.[4]
