Nico Müller (born 25 February 1992 in Thun, Switzerland), Anglicised as Nico Mueller, is a Swiss racing driver who competes for ABT Cupra Formula E Team in the 2022/23 ABB FIA Formula E World Championship.[1] An Audi backed factory driver in the DTM, Müller had completed several tests for the factory Audi FE team, having topped both of the series' "Rookie Tests" in 2018 and 2019.[2]
Background[]
Müller began in karting spending three full seasons from 2004 to 2007, before a debut in Formula Renault, taking part in the Swiss version of the series.[3] Müller also competed in the Italian Formula Renault Winter Series that season, but he would only compete in the Swiss championship in 2009.[3] Winning the championship, Müller moved up into the GP3 Series for 2010.[3]
DTM Dreams[]
In two seasons of GP3, Müller achieved three victories and a best championship result of third, prompting Müller to move to the Formula Renault 3.5 Series in 2012.[3] A ninth place in the Championship in his rookie year was transformed into fifth place in the 2013 edition.[3] Audi then opted to adopt Müller, granting him a drive in the DTM for 2014.[4]
Müller would claim ten points during his maiden DTM campaign, only just managing to finish in the top twenty for the season.[3] An equally dismal season followed in 2015, although Müller did enjoy so runouts in the Blancpain Endurance Series.[3] Indeed, it took Müller until the 2016 season to finally crack the DTM, claiming a maiden victory en-route to ninth in the Championship.[3]
Müller continued to compete in the DTM through to 2019, alongside various other drives in multiple disciplines.[3] Indeed, Müller would obtain experience in GTs, LMP2s and the World Rallycross Championship in 2017, as well as turn his hand to the Stock Car Brasil series in 2018.[3]
Formula E History[]
Müller was given his first taste of an ABB FIA Formula E Championship car during the 2017/18 season, with Audi offering him a drive at the 2018 Rookie Test.[5] It proved to be an excellent debut from the Swiss racer, with Müller setting a new circuit record at the Circuit Moulay El Hassan at the wheel of Daniel Abt's Audi e-tron FE04.[6] Müller was subsequently signed as Audi Sport ABT Schaeffler's development driver for the rest of the season, and assessed for a full race seat for 2018/19.[1]
Reserve Racer[]
Ultimately, however, Müller would miss out on a race seat for the fifth FE season, but was retained by Audi as the team's test and reserve driver.[1] The Swiss racer duly appeared at the 2018 Ad Diriyah Test, ending the day in sixth, before setting another new circuit record at the Marrakech E-Prix circuit a month later during the 2019 Rookie Test.[7][2]
Dragon Debut[]
In September 2019, it was reported that Müller was in talks to partner Brendon Hartley at GEOX Dragon.[8] On 17 September 2019, the American outfit confirmed Müller would race for them in the 2019/20 season.[9]
ABT Return: 2022/23[]
Müller sat out the entire 2021/22 season after being dropped by Dragon Racing at the end of the season, and would hence return to his duties in GT racing with Audi Sport.[10] However, when ABT Sportsline confirmed that they would return to the Formula E World Championship in 2022/23, Müller would appear high up on their list of candidates for a race seat, having competed for them in DTM and tested for their previous FE guise with Audi.[10] The Swiss racer was duly signed by ABT alongside fellow Audi and ABT pilot Robin Frijns for the ninth FE season, with both Müller and Frijns joining the primary testing phase of the Mahindra M9Electro that ABT would use for their return campaign.[10]
