Nicolás Ignacio Pino Muñoz (born 21 September 2004 in Santiago, Santiago Metropolitan Region, Chile) is a Chilean racing driver who served as a development driver for the DS Penske team during the 2024/25 ABB FIA Formula E World Championship.[1] A race winner in the European Le Mans Series and Stellantis Motorsport Young Driver Programme member, Pino would make his FE testing debut at the 2024 Rookie Test, before serving as a development driver for the Stellantis group ahead of Season Eleven.[2]
Background[]
Pino began karting at the age of eight in his native Chile, before moving to the European scene at the age of thirteen to prepare for a move into single-seaters which he duly did in 2019 with a seat in the Formula 4 South East Asia Championship.[3] Making four appearances, Pino would sign up for a full campaign in the F4 British Championship for 2020, finishing fourteenth, before making his GT series debut in the European Le Mans Series in 2021 in the LMP3 class.[3] Pino would also make his Euroformula Open Championship debut in 2021, albeit only appearing in a cameo role without success, while also claiming second in the GT4 Pro class of the Supercars Endurance GT4 South series in Australia in what was his debut racing GT cars.[3]
The Endurance Path: 2022 - Present[]
Pino opted to jump into the endurance scene full time in 2022, securing three victories and the runner-up spot in the ELMS in the LMP3 class, while also racing in its sister Asian and IMSA series.[3] The Chilean would also have one last run in single-seaters with a campaign in Euroformula Open, but only claimed a handful of points, meaning the Chilean pilot put his full focus into sportscars for 2023.[3] Pino would move up to the LMP2 class for the year, claiming one victory in the ELMS while alos making appearances in Asia and IMSA, while also finishing an impressive third in class on his 24 Hours of Le Mans debut.[3]
A repeat programme in the ELMS would follow for Pino in 2024, although he would not claim a win, while also struggling for major success in IMSA having also moved up to the LMP2 field in that series.[3] Pino also secured a full season campaign in the World Endurance Championship in the LMGT3 class, claiming his first pole but only one podium finish, before being signed by Proton Competition to race in the Hypercar class of WEC and IMSA for the 2025 season.[3]
Formula E History[]
Pino was first granted the sample an ABB FIA Formula E World Championship car during the 2023/24 season, when Stellantis, the owning group of both DS and Maserati, signed the Chilean driver to their Young Driver Programme.[4] Pino duly began an intense programme in previous DS cars, before making his public test debut for the group at the 2024 Rookie Test, the Chilean pilot taking over Jehan Daruvala's Maserati Tipo Folgore for the day, setting the 20th best time.[2] Pino would continue to test for DS and Maserati away from the track, and would help the development of the DS E-Tense FE25 before its debut during the 2024/25 season.[1]
