The Nissan IM03 is a single-seater electric racing car, developed by Nissan to compete in the 2021/22 ABB FIA Formula E World Championship with their factory team Nissan e.Dams.[1] Developed for the 2020/21 FE Championship, the introduction of the IM03 was delayed until partway through that season, after issues obtaining critical components affected its development.[2]
Competitive History[]
The IM03 was initially set to make its ABB FIA Formula E World Championship debut at the start of the 2020/21 season, although the option to complete additional testing under the new-for-2020/21 homologation rules meant Nissan opted to delay its introduction until the 2021 Rome E-Prix I.[3] However, issues in sourcing materials and key components meant that Nissan were forced to delay a second time, with the IM03 instead having to wait until the 2021 Monaco E-Prix to finally make its FE debut, with two examples run by the factory supported Nissan e.Dams team.[2][4]
Development History[]
The IM03 entered development in the spring of 2020, and would be based on its predecessor the Nissan IM02, albeit with significant revisions to major elements within the motor and inverter to increase efficiency and save weight.[5] The new design was intended to finally fully convert Nissan from their original two-motor design, a concept on the Nissan IM01, which had been banned shortly before the end of the 2018/19 season, and had impacted significantly on the development of the IM02.[6]
After a relatively uncompetitive end to the 2020/21 season, there was speculation that the powertrain of the IM03 was flawed, with a resonance having been diagnosed as the main issue with the design which was causing an inherent imbalance in the car.[6] Furthermore, because the issue was on parts of the powertrain that were homologated under the two year cycle, the Nissan squad could not implement a fix for the problem, and hence were prepared for a difficult campaign in 2021/22.[6] Regardless, Nissan would name their two IM03s during the 2021/22 season, with Sébastien Buemi's #23 IM03 christened as Ariya after Nissan's SUV range, while Oliver Rowland's #22 car would be named as Leaf, for Nissan's budget focused electric range.[7]
