Oliver Turvey (born 1 April 1987 in Penrith, Cumbria, England) is a British racing driver who races for the NIO 333 FE Team in the 2021/11 ABB FIA Formula E Championship.[1] Previously, Turvey proved to be an important factor in ensuring that then teammate Nelson Piquet Jr. won the title at the end of the 2014/15 season, before going on to demolish the Brazilian in their inter-team battle through 2015/16.[2][3]
2016/17 saw Turvey often battle for a position in the Super Pole shootout, even taking a maiden pole position at the 2017 Mexico City ePrix.[4] However, a lack of race pace would often see Turvey slip down the order meaning he was limited to a handful of minor points finishes throughout the season.
Regardless, Turvey would be retained by the newly renamed NIO Formula E Team for 2017/18, partnering debutante Luca Filippi.[5] Unfortunately for Turvey it proved to be another challenging season, although the Brit managed to secure a top ten finish in the Championship for the first time, as well as securing his first podium finish at the 2018 Mexico City E-Prix.[6]
For 2018/19 Turvey would be partnered by Tom Dillmann, although a lack of pace for the NIO squad ensured that neither driver proved particularly competitive.[7] Indeed, Turvey would only score seven points across the season, finishing twentieth in the Championship.[8]
Retained for 2019/20, Turvey got a new teammate in the form of Ma Qing Hua, although the Chinese pilot would be replaced by Daniel Abt midway through the disrupted season.[9] Yet, it proved to be a disappointing season for Turvey in the uncompetitive NIO, with the Brit failing to score at all.[10]
2020/21 saw Turvey get yet another new teammate for the season, with the Brit partnered by Tom Blomqvist for the campaign.[11] Turvey opened the campaign strongly with three points finishes in the opening six rounds, but no points over the rest of the season left him in 23rd.[12]
Background[]
Turvey was an established name in karting, before making his debut in Formula Renault during the 2003 Winter Series, followed by three seasons in Formula BMW UK.[13] Turvey was rewarded with the runners up spot in 2006 in Formula BMW by McLaren, winning the McLaren Autosport BRDC Award, which would fund his career for the next few years.[13] A few seasons in various one make Formulas followed, before Turvey became an official McLaren F1 test driver, and spent a few seasons in GP2.[13]
Turvey remained a test driver for McLaren throughout the remainder of his single seater career, before a 2012 switch to the GT3 Championship with McLaren.[13] In 2013, Turvey moved into purpose built Le Mans Prototypes, entering the World Endurance Championship and the 24 Hours of Le Mans.[13] 2014 saw a similar schedule for Turvey, backed by a class win at Le Mans, before a 2015 switch saw him make his bow in Super GT in Japan.[13]
Formula E History[]
Turvey got his first taste of the Spark-Renault SRT_01E at the 2015 London ePrix I at the end of June, driving in support of Nelson Piquet, Jr. at NEXTEV TCR.[14] Turvey's involvement was also crucial to the outcome of the Championship, as his strong pace in the Second London ePrix allowed Piquet to save energy in his first car while running behind the Brit as he battled in front.[2] Turvey's pace earned him two ninth place finishes, all the more impressive when his relative inexperience in the car is taken into account.[2]
NEXTEV's Next Man: 2015/16[]
After his impressive results in an unfamiliar car, it was no surprise that NEXTEV TCR decided to resign Turvey for the 2015/16 season, partnering him with Piquet for the full season.[15] Unfortunately for both drivers, the NextEV TCR FormulaE 001 proved to be a pig of a car, with both struggling to get any solid running at the 2015 Donington Test. Yet, fortune would favour the Brit at the opening round of the season, with Turvey surviving well to earn sixth place at the season opener in Beijing, a result which the team could only dream of after pre-season.[16]
As it happened, Turvey's sixth place in Beijing would prove to be the best result of the season for the team, although the Brit would be more competitive after the 2015 Punta del Este Test. A ninth place at the 2016 Buenos Aires ePrix was followed by a run of races where Turvey challenged for points but ultimately fell short.[17] Indeed, Turvey would not score again until the season ending race in London, with the Brit securing a final point for the season after a race long scrap with teammate Piquet, the first time they had both scored in the same race all season.[18]
Testing Resolve: 2016/17[]
Turvey's ability to beat Piquet consistently in 2015/16 saw him retained for the 2016/17 season, as NEXTEV attempted to build a significantly better car.[3] The new car did indeed prove to be an improvement on the old car, with both Turvey and Piquet able to complete multiple laps throughout the 2016 Donington Test, with the Brit by far the quicker of the two.
It was a seemingly strong start to the season for Turvey and Piquet, the pair locking out the front row at the season opener in Hong Kong.[19] However, both would slip down the order during the race, with Turvey ending up in eighth, three places ahead of teammate Piquet.[19] Turvey would also be the stronger of the two in Marrakech, ending the race up in seventh having missed out on a Super Pole slot.[20]
Turvey would get back into the Super Pole shootout in Buenos Aires, although he would once again slip down the order during the race, ending the day in ninth.[21] The Brit then claimed pole in Mexico City after Daniel Abt was excluded from the results, although Turvey's race was ruined early on with electrical gremlins.[4] Pointless performances then followed in Monte Carlo and Paris.
Turvey's quali pace deserted him for the second half of the season, leaving the Brit to fight for only minor points finishes in the two Berlin.[22] A season best finish of sixth followed in the first New York ePrix, although Turvey would not score at all in the following three races.[23] Come the end of the season, Turvey had slipped to twelfth in the Drivers' Championship standings, one place behind Piquet whom had ended the season with a run of strong results.
Turvey: Team Leader - 2017/18[]
Piquet left the newly renamed NIO Formula E Team ahead of the 2017/18 season, meaning Turvey was promoted to be the team's lead driver.[5] The Brit was joined at the team by debutante Luca Filippi, with the pair both taking part in the 2017 Valencia Test.[24] Turvey would impress throughout the test with his one lap pace, topping the time sheets on two of the three days, and claiming the fastest time overall with a 1:21.822.[24]
Unfortunately the NIO lacked the pace for Turvey to really compete in the season opening race in Hong Kong, with the Brit outpaced by Filippi.[25] Yet, Turvey managed to resolve his issues during the second race and claim an impressive sixth, only to drop out of the Marrakech E-Prix with a failure while running in the points.[26] The Brit then secured a fourteenth place finish after a low-key run in 2018 Santiago E-Prix, before putting in his best FE performance in Mexico City.[6]
Indeed, Turvey would somewhat steal the show in Mexico, briefly leading after Felix Rosenqvist retired, before fending off multiple moves from Sébastien Buemi to finish second.[6] The Brit then secured a seventh place finish in Punta del Este, with further points finishes coming in Paris, Berlin and Zürich.[27] Of those Berlin was the most impressive of Turvey's runs, with the Brit falling just shy of podium after another fight with Buemi and Jean-Éric Vergne in the closing stages.[28]
Unfortunately for Turvey his hopes of a strong end to the season in New York were ended when he suffered a heavy accident in free practice, damaging his hand.[29] His spot in the team was filled by reserve driver Ma Qing Hua for the season ending race, with Turvey vowing to return for the 2018/19 season having tested NIO's new car.[30]

Turvey would recover from his broken hand in time to sign another contract with NIO ahead of the 2018/19 season, and would once again lead the team for a full FE campaign.[7] He would partnered by Tom Dillmann for the season, with the pair finishing mid-table in the 2018 Valencia Test as the team focused on race pace rather than outright speed.[31] However, the two NIOs would be off the pace at the season opening round in Ad Diriyah, with Turvey missing out on points in thirteenth.[32]
Another low-key performance followed in Marrakech, before Turvey appeared to be somewhat competitive at the 2019 Santiago E-Prix, battling his way into the points with the aid of penalties and retirements around him.[33] Another pointless run in Mexico City followed, before Turvey again benefited from other's problems in Hong Kong to claim ninth.[34] Unfortunately for Turvey the NIO's lack of pace would soon dictate his season, with the Brit failing to score, or even threaten, a points finish at all over the next six rounds.[35]
Indeed, it was only another particularly brutal race at the 2019 New York City E-Prix I that allowed Turvey to get back into the points, the Brit inheriting tenth on the final lap as Jean-Éric Vergne was taken out on the final lap.[35] A pointless performance in the season ending 2019 New York City E-Prix II saw Turvey end the season in twentieth place, with just seven points to his name.[8]
Penske Prowess?: 2019/20[]
Turvey was retained by the newly re-branded NIO 333 FE Team for the 2019/20 season, serving as lead driver alongside former test/reserve runner Ma.[9] However, NIO would not enter the sixth FE season with their own powertrain, instead re-badging a pair of Penske EV-3s from the 2018/19 season.[9] As such, neither Turvey nor Ma were expected to be particularly competitive, as shown during the pre-season Valencia Test with Turvey a second and a half off the ultimate pace.[36]
A World Adventure: 2020/21[]
As FE became a World Championship for the 2020/21 season, Turvey would receive a new teammate in the form of Tom Blomqvist as the NIO squad returned to building their own powertrain.[11]
Eighth Trial: 2021/22[]
Turvey would get his eighth season in FE as NIO retained him as their lead driver for the 2021/22 season, with the Brit again joined by a new teammate in the form of Dan Ticktum.[1]
