Paul Aron (4 Feburary 2004 in Tallinn, Estonia) is an Estonian racing driver who competed for Envision Racing in two rounds of the 2023/24 ABB FIA Formula E World Championship.[1] A former member of the Mercedes Junior Team, Aron would get his FE debut as a stand-in for Sébastien Buemi at the 2024 Berlin E-Prix double header, having previously tested for Envision as a rookie in 2024 Misano E-Prix I earlier in the season.[2]
Background[]
Aron began his racing career following in the footsteps of elder brother Ralf Aron, starting in karting in his native Estonia before soon competing at a European level, culminating in becoming the CIK-FIA Karting European Championship Champion in 2018.[3] Graduating to single-seaters in 2019 with a season in the ADAC Formula 4 Championship, dovetailed with a campaign in the Italian F4 Championship, Aron would claim four victories across both series, finishing third in the latter and a spot in the Mercedes Junior Team.[3] A Covid restricted 2020 season saw Aron focus on the Formula Renault Eurocup, finishing winless in eleventh, before bouncing back in 2021 to claim third in the Formula Regional European Championship.[3]
National Hope[]
2022 saw Aron complete a sophomore campaign in FR Europe, finishing third once again but having trebled his win tally, before moving up the FIA ladder to the FIA Formula 3 Championship in 2023, finishing the season in third with one win.[3] Aron also made his FIA Formula 2 Championship bow at the end of the 2023 season, and would graduate to F2 full time in 2024 despite losing his Mercedes Junior Team support.[3]
Formula E History[]
Aron was picked by Envision Racing to serve as a reserve driver for them during the 2023/24 ABB FIA Formula E World Championship, and was duly announced alongside Joel Eriksson as a replacement for Sébastien Buemi, who alongside Robin Frijns and regular Envision reserve Jack Aitken, would be unavailable to compete at the Berlin E-Prix due to a clash with the World Endurance Championship.[2] Aron duly made his public FE debut at the pre-race test at the 2024 Misano E-Prix I, before duly making his debut for Envision at the 2024 Berlin E-Prix I, utilising the #16 Jaguar I-Type 6 of Buemi.[1] A fairly tame debut saw Aron claim thirteenth in the race after a race long fight with fellow stand-ins Kelvin van der Linde and Jordan King, before another quiet run to fourteenth in the 2024 Berlin E-Prix II the following day.[4]
Buemi and Frijns' return for the rest of the campaign meant Aron returned his focus to his title challenge in the FIA Formula 2 Championship for the rest of 2024, with the Estonian pilot not expected to get an FE race seat for 2024/25.
