The Penske 701-EV was an all-electric, single-seater, racing car developed for Dragon Racing in order to compete in the 2016/17 FIA Formula E Championship and officially registered as being manufactured by Penske.[1] Commissioned by Penske from Magneti Marelli, the 701-EV would be the first Penske badged powertrain to enter FE, and would ultimately prove to be a rather tricky design, claiming only a handful of points finishes en-route to eighth in the Championship.[2]

The design was heavily related to the Mahindra M3Electro, although while Mahindra retained a close partnership with Marelli, the 701-EV was refined by Faraday Future after the powertrain was received by Dragon with its own software development.[3]

Competitive History[]

Development History[]

Initially, Penske would work with Mahindra in creating a powertrain, with both approaching Magneti Marelli to develop a design, which featured a six-phase motor, created by bolting two three-phase motors together and mounting the unit transversely.[4] That design would also incorporate Marelli's silicon-carbide switch design, uprated from its original source from Formula One, and would be bolted to a bespoke 2 gear gearbox in order to provide the best combination of traction and efficiency.[4] However, the two designs would divert from there, with Mahindra getting Marelli to continue working with them, while Dragon and Penske would re-badge the design as the Penske 701-EV, and work with Faraday Future to adjust the design in minute ways and work with Penske on software updates.[3]

Dragon and Penske would operate their own development and testing programme with the 701-EV.[4]
