The Penske EV-5 is an all-electric single-seater racing car, developed by Penske for their factory supported team Dragon Racing for use in the 2021/22 ABB FIA Formula E World Championship.[1] Originally launched partway through the 2020/21 season, the EV-5 would prove to have trouble maintaining its pace over a race distance, although in the hands of Sérgio Sette Câmara the car did show flashes of excellent one-lap pace.[1]
The EV-5 would also be the last FE car developed by Penske, after Dragon Racing signed a deal with DS to become their factory team at the start of the 2022/23 season.[2]
Competitive History[]
Penske and Dragon Racing had initially planned to delay the debut of the EV-5 until the third round of the 2020/21 ABB FIA Formula E World Championship, as the two-year homologation rule allowed manufacturers to delay the introduction of their powertrains beyond the start of the season.[3] However, after a promising showing from the EV-5's predecessor, the Penske EV-4, the American squad opted to wait until the 2021 Monaco E-Prix to launch the EV-5, using the additional time to further work on the design, and implement new elements from technical partner Bosch, which had signed a deal with the team in February 2021.[3][4] A pair of EV-5s were duly prepared in time for the Monaco E-Prix, with the #6 car handed to Nico Müller, while Sérgio Sette Câmara obtained the use of the #7 car.[5]
Development History[]
The EV-5 entered development in early 2020, although the Covid-19 Pandemic delayed major progress in the design until after the conclusion of the 2019/20 season.[6] The new design would largely be based on the Penske EV-4, serving as an evolution of that design, with upgrades implemented to the inverter, motor and transmission to improve the EV-5's efficiency for the new campaign.[6] The addition of Bosch as a technical partner in February 2021 would see further revisions made to the design, with Bosch supplying a new motor control unit for the EV-5, with plans for Bosch to take over the design of Penske's entire Generation 3 powertrain design.[4]
