Podium Advanced Technologies (PAT) is an Italian electrical component manufacturer which specialises in high performance technology and motorsport applications.[1] Best known for their KERS system innovations and deal with the FIM MotoE World Cup to supply batteries, Podium would become the official battery supplier for the ABB FIA Formula E World Championship for the Generation 4 era.[2]

Background[]

Podium AT was formed in 2011 by a group of engineers with specialties in mechatronics and automotive engineering, and would embark on a project to develop a Kinetic Energy Recovery System for the Nürburgring Langstrecken-Serie that would debut in 2012.[1] That success saw Podium commissioned to create various other systems for a range of applications, including working with a restomod company to refirbish classic cars with modern powertrains, as well as a high-profile deal to work with Scuderia Cameron Glickenhaus to aid them in development of their first World Endurance Championship car in 2021.[1] The group would also sign a deal with the FIM MotoE World Cup to supply the series with batteries for the series' second generation of bikes.[1]

Formula E History[]

Podium AT were one of a number of firms to enter a tender for the ABB FIA Formula E World Championship when the series revealed its plans for its Generation 4 ruleset in early 2023, competing with existing supplier Williams Advanced Engineering and McLaren Applied Technologies whom had also supplied the series for the Spark SRT05e era.[3] Podium duly shocked the field by winning the tender, citing its existing success with their FIM MotoE World Cup deal with Ducati, which used an architecture that the FIA and Formula E wished to implement in the series.[2] The development phase for the Gen 4 ruleset would begin in 2024, with the first prototype of the car set to run in the summer of 2025 with Podium's battery at its core.[4]

Products[]

Podium AT are set to make the battery for the Generation 4 ruleset for the ABB FIA Formula E World Championship, and was given the following specifications to reach:[5]

  • 600 kW - output
  • 700 kW - input (onboard re-generation)
  • 55 kWh capacity
  • 340 kg maximum weight
  • 5 kWh recharge capacity through Pit Boost

The battery was also based on Podium's exisiting tech used for the FIM MotoE World Cup, which uses cylindrical cells in its architecture to form the main unit (1,152 for the MotoE battery with a capacity of 18 kWh).[5]
