The Porsche 99X Electric Gen 3, otherwise officially known simply as the Porsche 99X Electric, is an all-electric single-seater racing car, based on the Spark Generation 3 base chassis with a powertrain built by Porsche.[1] The car would compete in the 2022/23 ABB FIA Formula E World Championship, with two examples run by the factory Porsche Formula E Team, and another pair run as customer entries by Avalanche Andretti Formula E.[1][2]
Competitive History[]
The Porsche 99X Electric Gen 3 made its competitive debut at the 2023 Mexico City E-Prix, with four examples raced by Pascal Wehrlein and António Félix da Costa for the Porsche Formula E Team, while Andretti Formula E would enter cars for Jake Dennis and André Lotterer.[3] The race would see Dennis sweep to victory in the #27 Andretti entry after snatching the lead in the middle phase of the race, while Wehrlein would battle up to second mid-race to make it a one-two for Porsche's new creation on its debut.[3] The following two rounds would also see one-twos for the 99X Electric, with Wehrlein defeating Dennis in both races in Diriyah, with the new design noted for its excellent performance in slow-speed sections of circuits.[4]
Development History[]
The 99X Electric Gen 3 was developed at Porsche's motorsport and development base in Weissach, Germany, according to the new-for-2022/23 ABB FIA Formula E World Championship technical rulebook.[5] Porsche quickly reached the performance targets for the Generation 3 ruleset, and began on-track testing of their 2022/23 challenger in the summer of 2022.[5] The car was duly launched on 7 November 2022 at Porsche's Experience Centre in Franciacorta, Italy, with Andretti Formula E, who had secured a deal with Porsche to run a pair of their own 99X Electric Gen 3s during 2022/23, receiving their examples of the car shortly before the 2022 Valencia Test.[5]
