The Puebla E-Prix is a motorsports event, that was was held twice as part of the 2020/21 ABB FIA Formula E World Championship as the eighth and ninth rounds of the season. A late addition to the calendar, the Puebla E-Prix effectively replaced the Mexico City E-Prix on the 2020/21 Calendar, and would use a variant of the Autódromo Miguel E. Abed in Amozoc de Mota, Puebla, Mexico.

City History

The area around modern day Puebla was relatively uninhabited until the fifteenth century, when the site became entwinned in the Flower Wars between various native peoples in the region. A settlement was first founded in 1530 by the bishop of Tlaxcala as a request to the Queen of Spain as a means of better connecting Mexico City with the port of Veracruz. A legend arose about how the bishop came to pick the site of Puebla as a place for settlement via a dream, which gave rise to its original name of Puebla de los Ángeles (the City of Angels in English).

Colonies and Republics

Officially founded on 16 April 1531, Puebla would undergo a rapid population swell as a key part of New Spain, with a large population of indigenous people and Spanish Settlers due to its location on the trail between Mexico City and Veracruz. Agriculture and textiles would become a major source of income for the city, with the Zócalo quickly becoming the centre of the city, proper to the construction of the Puebla Cathedral, which began in 1575. As its influence and financial power grew so did the Puebla region's territory and influence, with the Puebla city council annexing large parts of New Spain to add to their wealth in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries.

After centuries of Spanish control the city would become a hub for the Independence faction, with Puebla becoming a major propaganda distributor for the Mexican rebels until they were granted independence in 1827. The city would subsequently fall to American forces under General Winfield Scott without resistance in 1847 during the Mexican-American War, before the American force was besieged for a month by General Joaquín Rea for a month. The city remained in American hands until the conclusion of the War, only to be targeted several times by French forces during the French Intervention of Mexico although the city would remain in Mexican hands when the Wars ended.

Modern Times

The city would also become embroiled in the Mexican Revolution, first as the site of precursor to the revolution, before it was taken by Zapatista forces during the full Revolt. After that Puebla would again turn towards an area of growth and an icon of Mexico, with the Cathedral becoming informally known as the "Eighth Wonder of the World", while the heart of the city became a UNESO World Heritage Site in 1987.

Formula E History

The Puebla E-Prix was a late addition to the 2020/21 ABB FIA Formula E World Championship schedule, having been revealed on 22 April 2021 as the fourth update to the season calendar was revealed. The Puebla E-Prix effectively replaced both the cancelled Mexico City E-Prix and the Santiago E-Prix on the calendar, and would serve as the first of two meetings in North America. However, due to the Covid-19 Pandemic, which was a major factor in why the Puebla E-Prix had been created, the city itself would not host the race, with the purpose built Autódromo Miguel E. Abed instead playing host to FE.

Circuit History

The Autódromo Miguel E. Abed was chosen to host the Puebla E-Prix, in-spite of the fact that it was not a street circuit, but rather a purpose built oval circuit with an infield. The nature of the venue did, however, play into its hands, for FE could pick a number of layouts to simulate a street circuit at the Autódromo, which had previously hosted the World Touring Car Championship and had been touted for a round of the IndyCar Series multiple times.
