Raffaele Marciello (born 17 December 1994 in Zürich, Switzerland), is a Swiss born, Italian racing driver, who serves as a test driver for GEOX DRAGON during the 2018/19 ABB FIA Formula E Championship.[1] A champion of the Blancpain GT Series and the FIA Formula 3 European Championship, Marciello had previously taken part in the 2019 Rookie Test for HWA Racelab as a works Mercedes-AMG driver.[2]
Marciello is also heavily rumoured to take over the #6 GEOX Dragon entry at the 2019 Rome E-Prix, although this has yet to be officially confirmed.[3]
Background[]
Marciello's career began in karting at the age of eleven, with the Italian duly climbing through the ranks to the KF2 class by 2010.[4] That same year would see Marciello move into single-seater race cars, with the Italian moving to the Abarth series in his native Italy.[4] Third in the Championship with two victories earned Marciello a spot in the Ferrari Driver Academy, as well as enough sponsorship to move into Formula Three.[5]
Shattered Dreams[]
Marciello entered the Italian Formula Three Championship in 2011, joining long-term Ferrari associated effort Prema Powerteam.[4] Third overall, and second in the rookie ranks, saw the Italian move in the FIA Formula 3 European Championship in 2012, with a stunning debut season seeing the Italian finish a runner-up.[4] Marciello duly went one better in 2013, becoming outright Champion, while also taking a seat in the Toyota Racing Series over the winter.[4]
Ferrari would promote Marciello to the GP2 Series in 2014, taking his first victory later that season after a race long duel with Stoffel Vandoorne.[4] He would also test a Ferrari Formula One car at the end of the season, before moving to another GP2 team for 2015.[4] However, a disappointing season with Trident saw Marciello move to Russian Time for 2016, with Marciello also losing his FDA status and a role as the Sauber F1 Team's test and reserve driver.[4]
2016 proved to be Marciello's last full campaign in single-seaters, with the Italian deeming the road to F1 too expensive to complete.[4]
GT Generation[]
Marciello left GP2 to begin a career in the w:c:motorsport:Blancpain GT Series, joining the Mercedes-Benz backed AKKA ASP team in 2017.[4] Fifth in the Endurance Cup earned Marciello a second season in 2018, with Mercedes also signing the Italian up as a full factory driver at the start of the campaign.[4] That seemed to spur Marciello on, with the Italian duly taking the Blancpain GT Series crown in the Sprint Cup, and finish as runner-up in the Endurance Cup.[4]
Formula E History[]
Marciello got his first chance to test an ABB FIA Formula E Championship car during the 2018/19 season, when offered a chance to drive at the 2019 Rookie Test.[2] The Italian subsequently drove for the Mercedes backed, but Venturi powered, HWA Racelab crew, ending the day in eighth as the best of the VFE 05 pilots.[6] That earned Marciello a role as test and reserve driver with GEOX DRAGON a few weeks later, with the Italian ace also getting a run at the 2019 Mexico City Test.[1]
