The Renault Z.E. 15 was an all-electric, single-seater, racing car developed by Renault to compete with the Renault e.Dams team in the 2015/16 FIA Formula E Championship.[1] A vastly different powertrain compared to the original design used as its base, the Spark-Renault SRT_01E, the Z.E. 15 would make history by being the first manufacturer built car to win an ePrix, winning on debut at the 2015 Beijing ePrix, before claiming both the Drivers' and Teams' Championship titles for Season Two, with Sébastien Buemi and Renault e.Dams taking the honours.[2]

Competitive History[]

The Z.E. 15 made its debut at the 2015 Beijing ePrix and it would be an auspicious start for the new design, with Sébastien Buemi claiming a dominant victory from pole position having run unopposed through the race, while teammate Nicolas Prost ran in the top four before a rear-wing failure late on caused him to retire.[3] That domination was set to continue in Putrajaya, with Buemi and Prost dominanting early on before issues on both of their first cars forced them to stop earlier than expected and then struggle to reserve enough energy in the second half of the race.[4] The duo would bounce back in Punta del Este as Buemi claimed another impressive win, before finishing second in both of the next ePrix with Prost also grabbing his first podium of the season in Mexico City.[5]

After a lack-lustre display in Long Beach, the Z.E. 15 narrowly missed out on claiming a victory on home-soil in Paris, before Buemi got his title chase properly back on track with victory in Berlin, again in dominant fashion.[6] Prost then claimed his maiden victory of the season from pole in the first London ePrix of the double-headed finale, while fifth in that race left Buemi three points behind Lucas di Grassi in the Championship.[7] The season finale would then prove to be a dramatic one, as Prost claimed his second and the Z.E. 15's fifth victory of the season, while Buemi survived an accident with di Grassi right at the start of the race to secure bonus points for pole position and fastest lap, enough for him to claim the title by two points.[2]

Development History[]

Renault set about developing their first powertrain for their factory backed partnership with e.Dams for the FIA Formula E Championship during 2014, with the car first running in early 2015.[8] The Z.E. 15 would feature a new design, with the eMotor, co-developed between RenaultSport and Zytek, mounted transversely, while also relocating the inverter to convert DC power from the battery to AC for the motor, located in the casing for the gearbox.[9] This lowered the centre of gravity considerably, with RenaultSport also lowering the weight by using a carbon fibre casing for the eMotor and differential, while also stripping down the gearbox to just two gears, one a starting gear and a longer second gear for the rest of the ePrix.[9]

That design would also incorporate and old-style gear lever rather than paddle shift on the steering wheel, a novel change for a modern single-seater.[9]
