The Renault Z.E. 16 was an all-electric, single-seater, racing car design that won the 2016/17 FIA Formula E Championship for Teams with Renault e.Dams, and would win seven ePrix across the season.[1] Indeed, the Z.E. 16, which would be raced by Renault e.Dams and Techeetah, would be one of the most successful designs in FE history, with Sébastien Buemi narrowly missing out on the Drivers' Championship on top of e.Dams' successful Teams' Championship campaign.[2]
Competitive History[]
Development History[]
Given the impressive performance of the Renault Z.E. 15 there was a philosophy of evolution over revolution for Renault when they developed the Z.E. 16, who would again work with Zytek to refine and lighten the design of their eMotor and Inverter.[3] However, there would be a major change, with Renault deciding to remove the gearbox entirely, and instead mount the eMotor transversely and attach it directly to the differential with a reduction gear which would allow the powertrain to efficiently deploy its torque.[3] The overall design was as a result a lot lighter, requiring e.Dams to need ballast to bring the car up to minimum weight, and was able to be mounted a lot lower than before which meant that the car had an impressively low centre of gravity.[3]
