Robert Mikhailovich Shwartzman (Ро́берт Миха́йлович Шва́рцман in Russian; רוברט מיכאילוביץ' שוורצמן in Hebrew; born 16 September 1999 in Tel Aviv, Israel) is an Israeli-Russian racing driver, competing under an Israeli passport and licence, who served as a test driver for DS Penske during the 2022/23 ABB FIA Formula E World Championship.[1] A runner-up in the FIA Formula 2 Championship in 2021 and former FIA Formula 3 Championship Champion, Shwartzman made his FE debut at the 2023 Rookie Test with the American-French outfit, setting the seventh fastest time overall during the test.[2]
Background[]
Shwartzman began his career in karting at the age of five, racing across Europe until 2014, when he secured his first season in single-seaters.[3] Entering the final six rounds of the Italian F4 Championship, Shwartzman impressed enough to secure a full Italian F4 seat in 2015, and would go on to secure third in the Championship with two wins.[3] The Russian racer also completed a full season in the ADAC Formula 4 Championship, finishing fourth in that series.[3]
A Ferrari Future: 2016-2019[]
2016 saw Shwartzman secure a seat in the sister Formula Renault 2.0 Eurocup and NEC Championships, finishing in the middle of the pack in both.[3] He remained in both series for 2017, and duly finished third in the Eurocup after claiming six victories.[3] His success brought Shwartzman the attention of Ferrari, who duly signed the Russian racer to the Ferrari Driver Academy at the end of 2017.[4]
Ferrari moved Shwartzman into the Toyota Racing Series to open the 2018 season, with the Russian racer duly securing the title in his first season.[3] With that Shwartzman spent the rest of 2018 fighting to third in the FIA Formula 3 European Championship, behind fellow FDA member Mick Schumacher and Dan Ticktum.[3] For 2019 the Russian racer was moved to the FIA Formula 3 Championship, which saw the Russian racer sweep to the title in his rookie season with 212 points.[3]
Talent vs Opportunity: 2020 - Present[]
Shwartzman was promoted to the Prema Racing squad to partner Schumacher in the FIA Formula 2 Championship for the 2020 season, and would duly back his teammate to the Championship title, the Russian registered driver finishing fourth overall with four wins.[3] For 2021 Shwartzman was partnered by his F3 successor Oscar Piastri, although a year of experience over his Australian teammate would not be enough for Shwartzman, who was beaten to the 2021 F2 crown by over 60 points by the Renault junior.[3] Regardless, Shwartzman would graduate from F2 in 2022, moving on to serve as a test/reserve driver for Ferrari in Formula One, and would also change his race licence and passport to his country of birth, Israel, following Russia's invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.[3]
For 2023 Shwartzman was retained as a Ferrari test/reserve in F1, as well as secure a seat with their factory supported AF Corse squad in the GT World Challenge Europe, as part of an assessment to potentially join their World Endurance Championship effort in future seasons.[3]
Formula E History[]
Shwartzman was approached by DS Penske ahead of the 2023 Rookie Test, who offered him his first taste of an ABB FIA Formula E World Championship car soon after the test in Berlin, Germany, was added to the 2022/23 calendar.[1] Partnering Will Stevens for the day, Shwartzman would use the #25 DS E-Tense FE23 of Jean-Éric Vergne, and would set the seventh fastest time overall and the join most laps with 112 tours of the Tempelhofring during the six hours of running.[2]
