Stéphane Jean-Marc Sarrazin, born 2 November 1975, is a French racing driver, who competed for Andretti Formula E in the 2017/18 FIA Formula E Championship.[1][2] A talented driver in his own right, Sarrazin had driven in every season of the FE Championship, having driven for Venturi and Techeetah in earlier seasons.[3]
Previously, Sarrazin would race Venturi for the 2016/17 season, scoring two points in the first half of the season.[4] However, after the 2017 Paris ePrix, Sarrazin was offered a seat in the more competitive Techeetah effort, partnering Jean-Éric Vergne for the rest of the season.[5]
By the end of 2016/17 Sarrazin had secured two podiums for Techeetah, although those efforts were not enough for the Frenchman to keep his seat.[6] He left the squad upon the arrival of André Lotterer, whose Porsche connections were thought to have played a part in his selection.[6]
However, Sarrazin would return to the FE field during the 2017/18 season, replacing Tom Blomqvist at Andretti for the 2018 Berlin E-Prix.[7]
Background[]
Sarrazin began his career in 1994, entering into Formula Renault and taking the championship in his native France.[1] After taking the Formula Three and Formula 3000 titles, Sarrazin got his one and only chance to drive in Formula One, replacing Luca Badoer in the 1999 Brazilian Grand Prix.[1] Sarrazin then became a test driver for various teams in Formula One between 2000 and 2003, before focusing on rallying.[1] Sarrazin then entered endurance racing in 2006, ultimately competing in the 24 Hours of Le Mans numerous times for Peugeot and Toyota after 2007.[1]
Formula E History[]
Sarrazinn competed alongside Nick Heidfeld for the Venturi Formula E Team in the inaugural 2014/15 Formula E Championship.[1] Although not as fast as his team mate, Sarrazin was more reliable at taking points, although by the halfway stage of the season, team mate Heidfeld was ahead in the overall standings. Accidents in Punta del Este and Miami cost Sarrazin valuable points, and both worked in favour of Heidfeld.[8][9]
Sarrazin scored tenth place at the 2015 Long Beach ePrix, before the European leg of the season saw him finally improve his point return compared to Heidfeld. Seventh in Monaco was beaten by sixth at the 2015 Berlin ePrix, where Sarrazin had been on the pace of team mate Heidfeld, and the race leaders, throughout.[10] His season ended relatively strongly too, with points in both London ePrix, including pole position in the season ending 2015 London ePrix II.[3]
Valiant with Venturi[]
For the second season of Formula E, Venturi partnered Sarrazin with ex-Formula One World Champion Jacques Villeneuve, the Canadian getting his first taste of the Championship at the 2015 Donington Test.[11] Having got the better of a relatively inexperienced Villeneuve during testing, Sarrazin secured his first points of the season by finishing ninth at the season opening Beijing ePrix.[12] After following this up with an excellent fourth place finish in the 2015 Putrajaya ePrix, Sarrazin found himself with a new teammate at the turn of the year, as Mike Conway replaced a frustrated Villeneuve.[13]
Backed by one of his Toyota Racing colleagues from the World Endurance Championship, Sarrazin once again pushed on, claiming another fourth place at the 2016 Buenos Aires ePrix.[14] Two rounds later, and Sarrazin found himself standing on the podium, having battled through a punishing 2016 Long Beach ePrix to claim second, beating title pretender Sébastien Buemi.[15] That result proved to be the highlight of the season for Sarrazin, as he achieved three more points finishes to end the season in sixth place overall.
Monégasque Musings[]
Venturi opted to retain Sarrazin as their lead driver for the 2016/17 season, partnering him with experienced German racer Maro Engel.[4] The 2016 Donington Test saw Sarrazin once again outclass his teammate, although the Venturi package seemed to be among the slower of those set to be shipped to Hong Kong for the season opener.
It was a fairly good start to the season for Sarrazin, the Frenchman securing his first point of the season despite slipping behind new teammate Engel in the race.[16] That was as good as it would get for Sarrazin, however, with the Frenchman failing to score in the next four races, largely due to the lack of pace in the Venturi machine. Indeed, Sarrazin would have to wait until his home race in Paris to add to his tally, matching his tenth place finish in the closing stages.[17]
However, Sarrazin seemed to have been gifted an out for his poor pace after the Paris ePrix, as Techeetah offered him a seat in their second pair of cars, having just seen Esteban Gutiérrez abandon them for IndyCar.[5] The Frenchman was therefore partnered with countryman Jean-Éric Vergne for the rest of the season, in a car that had won five of the first six races of the season. However, it would take Sarrazin time to get used to his new surroundings, and so there was little surprise that he failed to score in either of the Berlin ePrix.
Fortunately for Sarrazin the month break between Berlin and New York allowed the Frenchman to spend time with the team and car, meaning he arrived in the "Big Apple" in a far stronger position.[18] Indeed, it would be a strong weekend for the Frenchman as he swept to third in the race, despite having to start outside of the top ten.[18] He was unable to repeat his efforts in the second ePrix of the weekend, but Techeetah were more than satisfied with his performance the previous day.[18]
Sarrazin would repeat his podium feat in the first Montreal ePrix, sharing the podium with teammate Vergne as both fought for victory.[19] The season finale would not see Sarrazin match his feat, finishing down in eighth as teammate Vergne won, although that result did secure the Frenchman a top ten spot in the final standings.[20]
After the season was over rumours would circulate about the Techeetah team's future driver line-up, with Sarrazin seemingly destined to leave the team. Ultimately, rumour proved true, as André Lotterer was duly drafted in to replace the Frenchman, leaving Sarrazin without a drive for 2017/18.[6]
Andretti Allegiance[]
However, after a turbulent few months personally for Sarrazin, the Frenchman would secure a return to the FE Championship ahead of the 2018 Berlin E-Prix.[7] His opportunity came at Andretti Formula E, whom were searching for a second driver after partners BMW pulled Tom Blomqvist out of his seat so that the Brit could focus on his WEC commitments.[7] In their search for an experienced replacement, Andretti would ultimately land their sights on Sarrazin, with the Frenchman signing a deal to race for the rest of the season.[7]
Sarrazin's FE return proved to be a very quiet one, with the Frenchman off the pace of teammate António Félix da Costa as he finished dead last.[21] The Frenchman would improve to fourteenth in Zürich, with da Costa in the points, before fighting with the Portuguese racer in the first New York City E-Prix, ultimately falling behind in twelfth.[22] The Frenchman then completed his mini-season with another twelfth place finish, missing out on points, and likely a seat with BMW, by a fair margin.[23]
