Takuma Sato, born 28 January 1977, is a Japanese racing driver who competed for Amlin Aguri during the 2014/15 FIA Formula E Championship.[1] Sato would only compete at the season opening 2014 Beijing ePrix standing in for the absent António Félix da Costa, with the Portuguese racer returning for the majority of the season.[1]
Background[]
Sato brought one of the most colourful backgrounds to the Formula E championship, having started at the age of 18 in karting.[2] Already a champion on bicycles, Sato quickly showed his speed, moving to Europe in 1999 in order to pursue a career in Formula One.[2] Following his British Formula 3 championship title in 2001, Sato got a dream drive in F1, when Eddie Jordan gave him a drive in his team.[2] Sato moved to the Japanese owned BAR Honda team in 2002, taking an unexpected podium in 2004.[2] With Honda supporting a junior team in Super Aguri in 2006 (based in Japan) Sato moved to lead the new team.[2] After two years, Sato was left without a drive, when Aguri pulled out of the championship partway through 2008.[2]
The Japanese ace ultimately moved to the US after it became clear he would not get a new F1 drive, obtaining a drive in the IZOD Indycar Series in 2010. Yet there would be little joy for Sato across his four years in America, taking only one victory despite a series of memorable performances.[2]
Formula E History[]
Sato rejoined his old employers Aguri, shortly before the start of the 2014/15 Season, after Antonio Felix da Costa was forced to miss the start of the season due to his DTM commitments.[1] Sato therefore joined Katherine Legge at the team, running the car at the 2014 Beijing ePrix for the first time.[2] A semi-successful début saw him claim two points for setting the fastest lap, but tinged with the disappointment of a retirement despite his pace.[3] Once da Costa rejoined the team for the 2014 Putrajaya ePrix, Sato did not compete in Formula E again.
