Taylor Barnard (born 1 June 2024 in Norwich, Norfolk, United Kingdom) is a British racing driver who competes for the McLaren Formula E Team in the 2024/25 ABB FIA Formula E World Championship.[1] A race winner in Formula 2, Formula 3 and a European CIK-FIA Karting Championship runner-up, Barnard made his FE debut during the 2023/24 season as a stand-in for Sam Bird.[2]
In his three race cameo during season 10 with McLaren, Barnard would become the youngest ever driver in FE history, aged 19 years, 332 days when he started the 2024 Monaco E-Prix, and would also become the series' youngest ever point scorer with his maiden points finish at the 2024 Berlin E-Prix I.[3] Bird would return to his race seat for the rest of 2023/24 after the 2024 Berlin E-Prix II, with Barnard ending the season in 22nd in the Championship with five points to his name, enough to tempt McLaren into signing the Brit up to a full race seat for season eleven in place of Jake Hughes.[1]
Background[]
Barnard's career began in karting at the age of seven, competing in local and then national level until 2017, before moving onto the European scene and becoming a protege of Formula One World Champion Nico Rosberg, joining the German racer's academy.[4] Three season with the Rosberg Racing Academy culminated in second in the CIK-FIA Karting European Championship in 2020, with Barnard graduating to single-seaters in that same season, taking on the Italian F4 Championship.[4] 2021 saw Barnard move into single-seaters full time with a drive in the ADAC Formula 4 Championship in Germany, although funding issues with BWR Motorsports meant the Brit missed part of the season.[4]
Ladder Lessons[]
2022 saw another capaign in F4 level equipment for Barnard, with the Brit ultimately finishing as runner-up in the ADAC F4 Championship, as well as compete in the UAE and Italian F4 series as well.[4] In 2023 Barnard would open the season with a run to second in the Formula Regional Middle East series, before stepping up to compete in the FIA Formula 3 Championship, claiming one win and tenth in the Championship.[4] For 2024 Barnard graduated to the FIA Formula 2 Championship, and would claim his maiden victory in the series at the fifth round before ending his campaign early due to his impending commitments in Formula E.[4]
Formula E History[]
Barnard signed to be a test driver for the McLaren Formula E Team ahead of the 2023/24 ABB FIA Formula E World Championship and would make a public appearance for the team at the pre-season Valencia Test.[5] The Brit would subsequently become the Team's main reserve driver, completing another public test ahead of the 2024 Misano E-Prix I, and was duly called upon at the 2024 Monaco E-Prix after Sam Bird, the team's lead driver, crashed during FP1 and broke a bone in his hand.[6][2] Barnard's debut saw him become the youngest ever FE driver aged 19 years and 332 days, and would see the Brit impress with a run to fourteenth without major issues.[3]
Barnard would stand-in for Bird again at the 2024 Berlin E-Prix, and duly became the youngest ever point scorer in the series with a battling performance to tenth in the first race.[7] An eighth place finish in the 2024 Berlin E-Prix II would follow the following day, Barnard having been on the fringes of the fight for victory briefly, before Bird returned to his seat to complete the season ahead of the 2024 Shanghai E-Prix I.[8]
McLaren's Marvel[]
Barnard spent the rest of the summer competing in FIA Formula 2, although negotiations about expanding his FE role with McLaren would go on through the rest of the 2023/24 FE campaign, with Barnard remaining as McLaren's reserve driver and attending most E-Prix.[1] Those negotiations ultimately proved successful, with Barnard subsequently announced as McLaren's second driver alongside Bird for the 2024/25 season, replacing Jake Hughes whom he had partnered during his season 10 cameo.[1]
