Tom Dillmann (born 6 April 1989 in Mulhouse, France) is a French racing driver who competed in the 2018/19 ABB FIA Formula E Championship for the NIO Formula E Team.[1] Dillmann got his first shot in FE with the Venturi Formula E Team during the 2016/17 season after an impressive junior career, which saw him claim the German Formula Three Championship in 2010.[2]

Dillmann would race until the end of the 2016/17 season, securing a best finish of seventh at the second New York ePrix.[3] However, his efforts in place of Stéphane Sarrazin were not enough to earn him a seat for 2017/18, with Edoardo Mortara replacing him.[4]

Yet, Dillmann would be retained as Venturi's third driver, and would return to FE for the 2018 Berlin E-Prix as Mortara had to fulfil commitments elsewhere.[5] He duly completed the season finale with the team, claiming a best career finish of fourth in the 2018 New York City E-Prix I, before moving to NIO for 2018/19.[1]

Unfortunately the NIO squad were not competitive during the 2018/19 season, meaning Dillman failed to score a point throughout the season.[6] As a result, Dillmann was dropped by NIO ahead of the 2019/20 season, with Ma Qing Hua taking his seat.[7]

Background

After taking part in karting, soapbox and other experimental forms of racing in the early 2000s, Dillmann stepped up to racing cars in 2004, taking up a seat in the Formula Renault 1600 Belgium series.[8] A semi-successful debut season saw Dillmann claim one win and several podiums, as well as a few appearances in other regional Formula Renault Championships.[8] Bigger drives awaited in 2005, with Dillmann competing for two seasons in the Eurocup Formula Renault 2.0.[8]

European Escapades

Dillmann was drawn into the Red Bull Junior Team after the 2006 season, his prize coming in the form of a single campaign in the Formula 3 Euro Series.[8] Unfortunately it was an injury hit season, Dillmann missing the opening rounds after a brutal pre-season crash, although he would end the season with three podiums against his name.[8] He was duly rewarded for his return with a seat in the Swiss A1 Grand Prix team, although he was listed as a reserve.[8]

A poor start to the 2008 Euro Series saw Dillmann lose his place in the Red Bull Junior Team, although Dillmann did get a drive later in the season, claiming a handful of podiums.[8] His late season renaissance was not enough to secure him a drive for 2009, however, and so Dillmann would sit out the first half of the season without a drive.[8] A late season comeback did come through for the Frenchman, although it proved unfruitful, leaving Dillmann to secure a drive in the German Formula Three Championship.[8]

Working Back

The German Formula Three Championship would reignite Dillmann's career, as the Frenchman swept to the title despite several demotions.[8] Success handed Dillmann one off drives in other Formula Renault series, as well as a brief return to the Euro Series, although they were nothing compared to the offer of a GP3 Series at the end of the year.[8] A debut pole, and subsequent podium suggested that Dillmann would be a force to reckoned with, although the Frenchman was dropped after the opening round.[8] Fortunately for Dillmann another team picked him up for the rest of the season, with Dillmann recording several points finishes.[8]

An offer to drive in GP2 came at the end of 2011, with an impressive test seeing him take part in the non-Championship festival, claiming a podium finish.[8] That effort got him a full season drive, with Dillmann claiming a maiden win in only the third meeting of the season.[8] Unfortunately budget issues kept Dillmann from racing at every round, and come season end his exploits came to nought.[8]

Pushing Performance

Dillmann would secure a drive with a brand new team to GP2 for 2013, partnering with future Formula E rival Sam Bird, although he would be overshadowed by the Brit throughout.[8] Another move in 2014 saw the Frenchman only complete eight rounds of the season for two different teams, with only a single fastest lap for his efforts prompting him to quit the series.[8] A change to the new Formula Renault 3.5 Series followed in 2015, with Dillmann also getting a few one off drives in the World Endurance Championship and Blancpain Sprint Series.[8]

2016 would arguably be Dillmann's best season, for the Frenchman fought for the title in Formula V8 3.5 Series, coming out as Champion at his first attempt.[8]

Formula E History

Dillmann's first taste of Formula E came during the 2015 Donington Test, when the Frenchman was one of a number of drivers to try out for Team Aguri.[9] Yet, despite the fact he missed out to Nathanaël Berthon, Dillmann did attract the eye of some with his performance, with Venturi approaching him to be their reserve at the start of the 2016/17 season.[2] His role in the team remained that until the sixth round of the season, when Dillmann got his shot at an ePrix at the 2017 Paris ePrix when Maro Engel had other commitments.[2]

Venturi Virtue: 2016/17

His ePrix debut would see Dillmann fight for points throughout the race, getting caught in race long battles with several drivers.[10] Engel's return for the Berlin ePrix meant Dillmann was relegated to reserve driver once again, although all that changed when Stéphane Sarrazin left to take up Esteban Gutiérrez's vacant Techeetah seat.[11] As the team's reserve, and having outscored Sarrazin on his debut, Dillmann was instantly called in to fill the Frenchman's seat, getting the #4 pair of Venturi VM200-FE-02s for the rest of the season.[11]

Dillmann would endure a relatively poor weekend in Berlin, failing to score in either race after two poor performances in qualifying. Things looked set to continue in the same vane in New York, with Dillmann finishing a lowly thirteenth in the first race. However, the Frenchman would bounce back in the second ePrix of the weekend, fighting up the field from twelfth on the grid.[3]

The Frenchman's point scoring form would carry through into Montreal, with Dillmann claiming two tenth place finishes after fighting performances in both races.[12] Those two points moved Dillmann into the top twenty in the Championship standings, although with more than half a season's racing, the Frenchman was not expected to retain his seat for 2017/18.[4] Ultimately, Dillmann would be overlooked ahead of the fourth Formula E season, missing out on a drive at the 2017 Valencia Test to Edoardo Mortara.[4]

Reasoned Reserve: 2017/18

Dillmann would be retained by Venturi as a reserve driver by Venturi for 2017/18, and would take part in several private tests for the team.[5] Indeed, the Frenchman knew that he would get at least one appearance in FE in season four, with Mortara set to miss at least one round due to a clash with the DTM.[5] That clash came at the 2018 Berlin E-Prix, where Dillmann would just miss out on a points finish amid the final lap confusion.[13]

Dillmann would also fill-in for Mortara at the season finale in New York City, putting in one of his best performances in FE in front of new Venturi boss Susie Wolff.[14] Indeed, Dillmann would run close to the podium throughout the first race, ultimately ending the afternoon in fourth having fought with Lucas di Grassi, Daniel Abt and Sébastien Buemi.[14] Unfortunately Dillmann would be unable to build on that result, retiring early on in the second race with a gearbox issue while running in the top ten.[15]

NIO Optimism: 2018/19

Dillmann was released by Venturi at the end of the 2017/18 season, although his exploits in the final races had attracted interest from other teams in the field.[16] He duly grabbed the chance to join Oliver Turvey at the NIO Formula E Team for the 2018/19 campaign, getting a full season offer from the Anglo-Chinese squad shortly before the 2018 Valencia Test.[1] However, the season would not start well for the Frenchman, with Dillmann failing to score points at the season opening 2018 Ad Diriyah E-Prix.[17]

After a pointless race in Marrakech, Dillmann would retire from the 2019 Santiago E-Prix after hitting debris while fighting just outside the top ten.[18] Another quiet race outside of the points followed in Mexico City, before Dillmann came close to claiming his first points of the season with two battling performances to twelfth in Hong Kong and Sanya.[19] Dillmann subsequently had another anonymous performance in Rome, followed by a crash in the 2019 Paris E-Prix while running in the top ten as heavy rain and hail began to pound the circuit.[20]

The rest of Dillmann's season proved much the same, with the Frenchman rarely threatening the points at all as the NIO's overall lack of pace was put on full display.[6] Indeed, Dillmann's only contribution to the Championship came at the penultimate race in New York City, when the Frenchman got involved in an accident involving the two title challenging DS Techeetahs.[6] That, followed by a fourteenth place finish in the season ending 2019 New York City E-Prix II left Dillmann without a point and 23rd after his first full FE campaign.[6]

In-spite of his poor 2018/19 campaign, Dillmann was expected to retain his NIO seat ahead of the 2019/20 season, helping the initial development of their season six powertrain.[7] Yet, a take over from Chinese investors saw the NIO squad opt to hire a Chinese born racing driver instead of Dillmann, setting for NIO's former reserve racer Ma Qing Hua to partner Turvey.[7]
